MacGuffin Magazine 9: The Rug @macguffinmagazine Like practically everyone else, we've spent an inordinate amount of time over the past few months on the rug in our iving room, From our rugs we have looked at the warp and wet, press confernces, video call, our feet, and the trees beyond the window, their colors slowly changing. The rug was our limitation, and sometimes our panorama. On a bordered rectangle of two by three metres, we again watched The Dude, who in The Big Lebowski goes in search of his first peed-upon, later stolen rug that 'really tied the room together'. It's a rug that ties not just the room but the film together, like a frame within which the imagination can run free. We read about Michel Foucault, who forty years ago called the rug a heterotopia, a place between the real world and a fantasy world, a 'host of imagination' And we recalled Freud's chaise longue, where patients lay on a Persian rug and flew off into the worlds of their dreams. Amid all this imagination, the more prosaic role of the rug seeped in through our screens and our conversations. Its role in the lives of our mothers and grandmothers, for instance, who enriched their worldview with their textile art but early on in their careers noticed that the weaving of rugs formed the glass ceiling of their artistic calling. Or in the lives of the Navajo in New Mexico, who were exploited by the producers of computer circuits on account of their weaving arts. And in the lives of Palestinian refugees, for whom the rug is no longer a ceiling, a wall or a home, but a huge absence, irreplaceable because of the impossibility of settling anywhere, let alone having a place for their sheep to graze. New rugs are needed there, and new panoramas.
