after mack’s face injury, his gf is quick to look after him once the game is done
masterlist
she waited impatiently near the doors of the locker room awaiting her boyfriend's arrival. y/n's mind couldn't stop replaying the horror on her features and everyone else's when they saw the blood trickle down macklin's face after a nasty high stick hit. she knew he was okay because he was right back on the ice once the bleeding stopped, but the image wouldn't shake the girl's brain.
lingering after the game felt so long this time around and y/n wondered if it was just because she was anxious about seeing her boyfriend and properly checking up on him. she swiped through twitter and instagram continuously while video replays of the rookie's hit filled her feeds. she just shut her phone off all together for now, not being able to watch the play anymore.
finally, the players began trickling out. y/n's head popped up, searching for the eyes of macklin in the crowd. she spotted him with will near the middle of the pack and he immediately found her gaze. will sensed that they probably wanted to talk, so he split off from the boy once they got closer, giving a small nod to y/n as he passed.
"hey," macklin began, but was caught off guard when y/n jumped into his arms.
"let me see it," she grabbed ahold of his chin, turning his face to the side to examine the new scar.
"it's really not that bad now. they cleared it up really good," the brunette tried reassuring his girlfriend knowing she probably had a hundred thoughts running through her.
"you scared the shit out of me when i saw all that blood. it looked a lot worse," y/n stepped back, arms crossing over her chest.
macklin frowned at the sudden distance between them, "i'm sorry, baby. i promise i'm fine. see?" he gave his best grin hoping to further prove how he was doing.
"well, if i see wilson, i'm gonna punch him myself," y/n huffed, looking around like she would catch the older player lingering somewhere.
macklin laughed, tugging y/n into his side and kissing the side of her head, "you're so cute when you're upset. i promise i'm fine though. i mean you saw me play afterwards."
"yeah you fucking power played. i guess that was your redemption," the two exchanged a laugh and macklin enjoyed finally pulling a smile from her.
"can i come back to your place tonight?" the boy wondered as they moved themselves closer to the exit.
"i thought that was a given already," y/n chuckled.
macklin went to tell will they were leaving before rushing out of the SAP center so he wouldn't have to do any press. most days he didn't mind, but tonight the boy was itching to get out of there and spend some much needed time with his girl. they hadn't seen each other since last weekend—school and hockey keeping them way too busy.
"just so you know, i am gonna baby you the whole night," y/n informed once they were securely in her car.
"mm, i can't wait. a face mask is just calling my name," the hockey player leaned back in the passenger seat, hand falling to the girl's lap as she pulled out of the parking lot.
luckily, there was no early morning practice tomorrow, so macklin was gonna use that to his full advantage and spend the night in y/n's dorm. the couple rode in comfortable silence into santa clara university, a convenient 7 minutes away from the arena so y/n never missed a home game.
she parked her car again and the couple hurried into her building. the few students wandering around the lobby caught sight of macklin's suit he put back on, a few of them recognizing him from as a sharks player and as y/n's boyfriend because he was over so much.
they lucked out with y/n's roommate hanging out with her own boyfriend tonight, so they had the whole dorm to themselves. macklin immediately thew his backpack onto the ground and shoved his suit jacket from his shoulders.
"gonna shower. i didn't really before we left. you're welcome to join me if you want," the brunette winked at the girl who flushed.
"wow, so classy of you. i did already shower this morning, so i'll have to pass this time," y/n laughed.
"damn, i thought you'd say yes. you sure you don't wanna shower again?" he winked again. y/n groaned, pushing her boyfriend to the bathroom.
"i'll be out here with your face mask."
the rookie accepted his lonely shower fate and disappeared into the bathroom. y/n took the opportunity to tidy up the room and get all the things she needed for their face masks.
20 minutes later, macklin came back out of the bathroom freshly showered and in more comfortable clothes. y/n hung up his suit jacket on the door of her closet, instructing him to do the same with the rest of the outfit so it wouldn't wrinkle.
the boy climbed into her bed a second later, positioning himself against her pillows, "i'm readyy," he sang.
"i've never known you to be so excited for a face mask," y/n grinned.
"it really makes my skin smooth, so i like it," the boy explained.
y/n handed mack her headband so his hair wouldn't be in his face or in the mask. he didn't hesitate to slip it over his head and expose his forehead. the girl giggled at the sight.
"are you laughing at my big forehead?" the boy raised his eyebrow, hands finding places on y/n's hips as she straddled his waist.
"maybe," she hummed, leaning forward to begin rubbing the cream on his skin.
mack admired her focused expression while just really taking the time to take in every part of her as she applied the mask. this was his favorite part of face masks because he could stare at her without shame and she hardly noticed because she was too focused on the mask.
"have i told you how beautiful you are?" the brunette wondered softly. he watched the way y/n's cheeks heated up into a deep blush.
"you have," she muttered.
"well, i'm gonna say it again. you're really beautiful," mack grinned.
"you're sappy tonight," y/n flushed.
"what? can i not say how beautiful my girlfriend is?"
"no, you can. thank you," she finished spreading the mask, leaning back to admire her work.
"how's it look?"
"great. i'lll let you know when five minutes are up," the girl set a timer on her phone and then mack grabbed the mask cream from her hands before she could set it back on the dresser.
she looked at her boyfriend quizzically.
"can i do yours?" he wondered with a soft expression.
y/n blushed again, "just don't get it in my hair."
"promise, i won't," macklin agreed and y/n let him have at it.
his touch was gentle as his fingers began rubbing around her skin. his lip poked out from his lips as he focused on doing it right. y/n loved how much he wanted to do it correctly for her sake and his expression really was just to die for.
"okay, did it," macklin leaned back to admire his work the same way y/n did. she loved the proud little smile on his lips, pulling her camera up to examine how well he did.
"wow, looks great, mack. your best one yet," y/n agreed.
"what can i say? practice makes perfect," the boy hummed, placing everything back onto her dresser.
"so how's your lip doing now?" y/n wondered as mack's hands wandered across the expanse of her hips and waist.
"i can't even feel it anymore, so good. i told you i'm fine," he eyed her.
"i know, just let me be a worry wart."
the sharks player smiled at her words knowing how much she liked to worry about things, especially the things that didn't need to be worried about. he reached up to quickly peck her lips, tryng to avoid getting face mask on one another.
"i love you," the brunette said.
y/n's smile grew, the whole i love you still new to them but heartwarming to hear, "i love you, too," she kissed him again and now they didn't care about getting face mask on one another.
figure skater x macklin celebrini au (blaire + macklin)
got a fun idea to do an interview style fic like i've done with the samy + will au where blaire and mack talk about going to milan together, skating, and being considered canada's royalty going into the olympics
au masterlist
ALL OF CANADA'S GEN Z IS CALLING THEM "CANADIAN ROYALTY." figure skater, blaire stevenson, and ice hockey player, macklin celebrini, are taking canadian news by storm after the announcement of them joining canada's olympic teams for figure skating and men's ice hockey. gen z is calling them their royalty.
why?
today we sit down with stevenson and celebrini while they tell us about this journey to milan and the impact they've had on their home country since joining their olympic teams.
the two of you have become quite popular amongst your gen z counterparts. tell us how this happened.
blaire: honestly, i have no idea. i woke up one day like a few months ago leading up the olympic qualifiers and it was just something people started saying on tiktok and stuff
macklin: i think with so many younger athletes getting a shot at the olympics, the younger generations really feel seen and represented that people their age can accomplish something so monumental alongside the veterans
blaire: i think it's super funny also because we mainly compete and play in the states but we're still canadian royalty
what was it like making that qualifying team and for macklin, being called up to play on the olympic team with some of the best native canadian players?
blaire: it felt so surreal. i couldn't believe it at all. i mean i'm so grateful to be able to get this opportunity to represent my country and do something i've dreamt of since i was a kid
macklin: she basically stole my words. i'm also really grateful for this opportunity. even though i play for the states, i'm forever a canadian and being able to represent them at this big of a level is such a dream
blaire, you went into a close competition during those qualifiers. can you tell us about those moments and what you were thinking?
blaire: in my short, i fell 2nd to bianca and i mean, she has a killer short program. her spins have always been stronger than mine so i was honestly pretty nervous. i had been practicing that program back at college knowing i wanted to create a good one for the qualifiers and that was just months of sweat and hard work. when we got to the free though, i knew i had an edge to bianca because i've always had a strong freestyle and i knew if i messed up something minor, i could easily make it up which i can't in the short
macklin: i swear i was on the edge of my seat through like all 3 of those competition days
what kind of mindset are you taking into milan with you for the team event and the individuals?
blaire: obviously, i wanna give it my best and be able to help bring canada to gold. i also know that i need to take in the moment and just appreciate it because i know not everyone gets an opportunity like this in their lifetime, so i'm definitely just gonna try and have fun too because this sport is also really fun and being at the olympics doesn't happen everyday
macklin, you don't play until the 2nd half of the olympics. what are your plans for those days before you get into the game?
macklin: definitely practicing with the team and getting to know them and our dynamics. i'll be over watching blaire compete too
blaire: i'm forcing him to watch me
macklin: oh my god, stop. people are gonna genuinely believe that
the two of you went to the same boarding school together in minnesota as well as chicago before going your separate ways for college. what was growing up together like?
macklin: wow we never talk about shattuck like ever or mcfetridge. she hated me when i first came to shattuck
blaire: stop! i did not
macklin: you totally did. don't lie
blaire: i just..i had a preconceived notion about hockey players and i was just a little wary about him that's all, but i quickly realized i was wrong and we got along really well really fast
macklin: yeah, we clicked almost instantly
blaire: going to mcfetridge together actually happened on a whim. we wanted to further develop our careers and mcfet wanted us so we went together. that was really nice because we already knew each other so it didn't feel too lonely being new
how did you guys find your way back to each other in san jose?
macklin: at that point we hadn't talked in almost two years but i happened to see her at a college football game which was such a coincidence
blaire: and then he found out i went to santa clara university and he came to one of my meets and..everything kind of snowballed after that
macklin: it sounds like i stalked her and like..ok, maybe i kind of did, but i wanted to know how she ended up in san jose and santa clara is not far from the rink so..yeah
what's something you're looking forward to in milan and cortina?
blaire: i'm really excited for the food. italy has such good food
macklin: yeah same honestly
blaire: also watching other atheletes compete i'm excited to see skiing and snowboarding
well thank you so much for taking your time to talk with us. we're looking forward to watching your journey's in a few weeks. as a gift, we're giving you these crowns to officiate your statuses as canadian royalty
blaire: oh my god these are awesome. thank you so much!
macklin: wow thank you!
stevenson and celebrini will be competing february 4th-february 22nd at the winter olympics in milan cortina. tune into cbc to watch them live!

the entire hotel room was quiet besides the soft murmurs coming from rick and robyn's room and the occasional hum of the tv charlie and aiden were watching across the hall. after the game, mack reluctantly agreed to go back to the hotel with his family, but he had hardly said a word. the game kept replaying over and over and over in his mind like he could just go back and fix every mistake that cost them the gold medal. no one had seen the brunette so deflated before.
even his parents' words couldn't bring him back.
they decided to give him space for now. blaire was in charlie's room with her and aiden, the three of them mindlessly watching tv even though it was all in italian. she couldn't stop thinking about her boyfriend out in the other room though. she didn't wanna anger him further, so she also gave him some space, but her heart ached for him. when he came out of the locker room to greet them, he hugged her tight but didn't say anything else.
she didn't wanna push and overstep boundaries when he clearly needed space, but she also wanted to be there for him. she wanted to make sure he knew she'd always be there for him.
the figure skater gave it five more minutes before mumbling something about going to the bathroom. the siblings hardly questioned it as she slid off the bed and carefully opened the door.
the suite was so quiet it felt eerie.
blaire shuffled down the hallway. she slowed when she neared the end of it where it opened into the kitchenette and the small living room. she knew mack was on the other side of the wall because she could hear him mumbling things to himself. she listened for a second, frowning when all she heard was him tearing himself apart.
it was even worse when the all of the news outlets had been talking him up the past few weeks and the breakout performance he was about to have being so young at the olympics. she knew the pressure had probably been tenfold on him knowing he needed to live up to what everyone was saying.
she hadn't really looked at any of the news since canada lost the gold medal game. she just hoped none of it was too harsh.
finally, blaire worked up enough nerve to carefully edge around the corner. she poked her head out first, finding mack on the couch. the tv was playing the rerun of the game and she watched the way the canadian team skated around the ice falling short of the goals they needed to take the win against the us.
she looked away though because she didn't need to watch it again. she already saw it happen in real time. instead, she settled her gaze on her boyfriend. he was slumped down, face contorted like the pain of the loss still hurt. his one cheek was still red and a bit swollen from the cut he got early on. it must've hurt like hell.
mack must've felt her presence because he looked over his shoulder and saw her lingering in the entryway. his features softened out so if he was upset or mad in any way, it all disappeared with blaire. "hey," she said quietly like she was afraid to disturb the quiet of the suite.
"hey," mack's voice came out rough and hoarse. it broke her heart further.
"i know you wanted time by yourself but i just wanted to come check on you. make sure you're okay," the girl said. she leaned her head against the wall, hating the way her boyfriend deflated even more. "i mean..i'm whatever. it hurts."
"yeah. i'm sure."
the silence lingered between the couple. mack stared straight ahead, eyes set and possibly a little glossy but he didn't let blaire see. she gazed over his figure one more time, figuring the silence was him telling her he didn't wanna talk any more.
"i'll be in the room if you need anything. just wanted to..see you," blaire mumbled, beginning her retreat back to charlie and aiden.
mack finally shifted his eyes back to her. there was something conflicting in his gaze like he didn't want her to walk away but he couldn't find it in himself to tell her to stay. his brain and his heart kept telling him two different things. his head was telling him she was probably thinking the worst of him because he just lost the gold medal game—second guessing wanting to be with him after such a bad loss like that. his heart though, it knew she'd never think that about him. it wanted her so close that mack could breathe her in like oxygen and calm all the anxieties running through his brain.
blaire was halfway down the hallway when she heard his voice again, "blaire?"
she stopped, gazing over her shoulder. mack was standing at the end of the hallway. she turned fully, opening her mouth to ask what he needed but his tears fell faster. he doubled over himself, shoulders shaking and the sobs falling from his lips. blaire went to him, catching him before he completely crumpled to the ground. his big arms wrapped tightly around her waist while he buried his head into her shoulder.
"i'm right here. it's okay," she cooed. mack was so upset, he couldn't hold himself up so they both sunk to the floor. she'd never seen him cry like this in all the time she knew him and it absolutely ached her. he always tried to keep his emotions tucked away so no one could see them, even around her. he tried to be the strong one, but today he just couldn't be.
not after losing one of the biggest games of his career.
the dirty blonde pulled her fingers through his hair, gently massaging his scalp. he was clutching onto her like a lifeline, shoulders still shaking and face becoming wet with tears. blaire's shirt was starting to soak through but she hardly even noticed.
one of the doors cracked open. robyn looked out after hearing her son's cries and when she saw blaire and mack on the floor together she frowned. the girl found the older woman's gaze and wordlessly spoke with just looks. mrs. celebrini understood and carefully retreated back into the bedroom.
when mack's head lifted again, blaire eased off to give him some space. his eyes were red and puffy, "i'm sorry. i didn't mean to just—"
she quickly grabbed his face, brushing her thumbs across his wet cheeks, "you don't have to apologize or explain yourself, baby. i know. i know it hurts."
her use of the pet name warmed the boy's heart, "fuck, it hurts so bad. i can't stop thinking about it."
she gently brushed her thumb over his cut. "so let's talk about something else. let's think about something else," she encouraged knowing getting his mind off of it would help.
mack just stared at her like he didn't know what else he could possibly be thinking about right now.
"i'm kind of dreading making up all my chem labs when we get back. i have like..3 to do i think. luckily, my professor is letting me take the chem quizzes online as long as i watch the lecture videos." blaire took the lead and started taking about her chem class that she kind of hated.
"even though we hate it, my partner and i are really good at doing titration. we got it right the first time while everyone else had to do it like 3 times before getting it right," she laughed and something in the hockey player settled hearing her laugh.
his features softened out again, so blaire took that as a sign that her talking was helping. "i think about you in class a lot."
"you do?" he seemed surprised to hear that. "yeah. i think about what you're doing in the moment even though i probably know because you text me minute by minute updates. sometimes you're all i can think about and i miss half the lecture."
obviously, blaire thought about him but for some reason, mack didn't think she thought about him nearly as much as he thought about her. he squeezed her hand that was resting on his leg. "you're all i can think about like all the time," he rasped.
her cheeks turned rosy. "even during practice and games?"
"all the time," mack confirmed, squeezing her hand tighter.
"i love bragging about you to my friends. all my sorority sisters are like insanely jealous we're dating," the girl giggled again.
"really?"
"mhm. i tell them how we met back in high school and how annoyed we were of each other at first."
"i was never annoyed of you. i really wanted to talk to you but i don't think you ever wanted to talk to me," mack hummed. blaire flushed, shrugging. "i probably didn't at first, but i'm glad i did. couldn't imagine a life without you in it."
the hockey player flushed as well. those doubts he started conjuring up just 20 minutes ago were finally starting to ease. he didn't know why he ever thought blaire would leave him after hearing the way she talked about him like this. she loved him through and through no matter if he won or lost.
when a new kind of silence fell between them, one that wasn't tension-filled, blaire slid herself into her boyfriend's side. he glanced down at her, smiling softly when she found his gaze. "this game doesn't define you, mack. you played your heart out these last two weeks and i'm always proud of you. win or lose."
he pressed his forehead against hers, breathing in her faint body wash smell of vanilla and rose. "you'd never think differently of me?"
"never."
"i bet the headlines are tearing me apart. canadian royalty falls short of the gold medal on one side," mack huffed. blaire shook her head though. "i haven't really looked, but i'm sure they're not. people love you regardless."
"sorry i may have messed up our status," he half joked.
"what did i say about apologizing? none of that matters to me. we just competed in the olympics. that tops anything else," blaire assured. she could care less about people calling her and mack canadian royalty. it was cute, but she wasn't gonna be heartbroken if people stopped calling them that for whatever reason.
"you're sure?"
"positive. i love you," blaire confirmed, pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek. the boy grinned, directing her lips to his for a proper kiss.
her lips tasted sweet against his and exactly what he needed to stop thinking about everything for ten seconds. she ran her hand down his face, clutching his jaw. when they pulled away mack held her close. "i love you. i'm really glad we got to experience being here together."
blaire smiled brightly, "me too. back again in 2030? redemption?"
mack laughed for the first time since getting to the hotel, "i'm already planning it out."
when robyn heard macklin laugh from outside the door, she glanced at rick and smiled. as long as blaire was by his side, she knew he'd be okay.

ONE.
she had a huge exam tomorrow and she probably should've been studying, but her hands moved faster than her brain could stop herself. boston university men's hockey appeared across her search bar and when she hit enter, her eyes scanned the top names that came up on first entry.
it was so stupid to be looking him up. she broke up with him. why was he always on her mind though?
blaire swiped her finger across the trackpad as she looked up the bu roster. she found macklin's name embarrassingly fast, quickly shifting her eyes around the other students in the library to make sure none of them were eyeing her computer. just for good measure, she dimmed her screen brightness a few notches.
macklin's profile page was fairly brief still, but it did have some stats about the few games he's played so far.
all of it was practically ingrained into blaire's brain by now. seeing the words chicago steel flooded her memories though and how all of that really wasn't that long ago. she stared at mack's headshot, his little cheeky smile still swimming in her mind.
she scrolled further down to read his stats. it didn't surprise her that he was already dominating the ice as a freshman and was already up 7 goals since the season started. he had been one of the most watched players since shattuck.
at the top of the page was a link directing her to the live game that must've been on. BOSTON UNIVERSITY VS. MERRIMACK ON NOW!
blaire really should've been studying. she hardly even understood what was happening in the class with the exam, but her finger navigated to the link anyway. a new window opened and it took a second to load, but the bu boys appeared on her screen a moment later in the middle of the 2nd period.
the figure skater paused her music and switched her headphones to connect to her computer so she could hear the commentary. her eyes subconsciously looked for mack and she found him almost instantly. his 71 flew down the ice with his line in tow. the way he passed the puck was so distinct she could almost picture the two of them back in chicago and he'd make her do drills with him for fun.
he was so good. maybe even better than back in chicago. the collegiate training was definitely working him and sharpening up his skills. blaire sat wordlessly watching her computer, in a bit of awe even.
the regret of breaking up with him climbed higher in her chest. her hand twitched by her phone as if her mind was telling her to text him and break their no contact.
"hey, blaire," a voice broke her from every thought. her head snapped up and one of her figure skating teammates smiled beside her. reality came crashing back down.
"hey, lindsey," the dirty blonde managed a smile. she watched her friend's glance flick to her computer and then her eyebrow raised a little, "are you watching hockey?"
"uh, yeah. kind of. wanted to take a break from studying for a few minutes," she shut the computer before lindsey could get a closer look at what hockey game she was watching.
she hadn't really told her friends much about mack and she kind of wanted to keep it that way. "i didn't know you were into hockey," lindsey didn't think much of it though as she walked around the table to sit down. blaire flushed.
"yeah, my brothers were kind of into it and i mean i see them sometimes when i'm practicing," she said casually.
"oh, cool. cool. maybe we'll go to a game or something sometime," lindsey smiled. blaire just nodded and was relieved when her friend laid off the subject.
while she opened her computer to do work, blaire opened hers to the game. bu was up by 2 and she heard the commentator mention something about mack scoring both of them. she also found aiden on the ice.
breaking up with mack meant losing the relationships she made with his siblings. that hurt almost as much as the break up because they became blaire's siblings too. when her oldest brother stopped reaching out, aiden took her under his wing. now it just felt too awkward to talk to him after everything. even talking to charlie felt weird for the girl, so she just..didn't.
blaire watched the rest of the game for the next hour. she didn't even manage to click back into her lecture notes because she was too distracted by the game and mack scoring another point and assisting with the final one that secured their win. a soft smile sat on her lips watching him celebrate with his teammates.
she itched to text him, but she had a bit more self restraint than that. when the live stream ended, blaire finally got back to studying but her mind wasn't cleared from the boy she just watched have the time of his life on the ice for two hours.
TWO.
of course, macklin made the canadian world juniors team. blaire didn't even doubt he wouldn't. he played some of the best games back at bu for the first half of the season, his spot was already secured by week 1.
she read up on the stats of the other teams and saw how good some of the u.s. players were. a lot of them were coming from boston college—some of bu's biggest rivals so she wondered if mack recognized or knew any of them because of it. the canadian team had good players too though. a lot of them had just gotten drafted a few months ago.
it was way to early to be awake and this was probably another stupid idea, but blaire wanted to see him play his first game. she blinked the sleep from her eyes, hardly registering that it was 6 in the morning as she opened her computer and found the live stream of the game.
she made sure the volume was down so she didn't wake up her dad or brother. they were just starting with national anthems and introductions when the stream booted up. blaire found mack almost immediately even though she didn't know what number he was wearing. his face was just recognizable and familiar to her.
he sported 17 for the tournament which was his lucky number. he looked confident and ready to play some hockey for the next week and a half.
maybe she was reading too much into things, but he hardly looked phased from the breakup. his smile was always big and joyful like nothing was ever bothering him and in a way, it kind of hurt blaire the tiniest bit.
she didn't have any right to be upset though, but she thought just maybe it'd take him less than 4 months to move on.
but who was she even kidding? she broke up with him yet here she was watching one of his games for the 5th time.
when the game finally got underway, mack was front and center doing the face off. playing center was his main skill and what got his team the most goals. she watched as he flew across the ice with the puck, passing it down his line to stay open. blaire's eyes flew with him, never even taking a glance away from his 17.
he played like he could feel her watching him through the screen, so sharp and so efficient. whenever she was in the stands back at shattuck or chicago, her presence seemed to boost the boy's performance a hundred times better.
during halftime, blaire got up to the use the bathroom. it was now 7, still way to early to be awake during winter break. she shuffled down the hallway to pee and brush her teeth. when she finished, her brother's door opened at the same time she was walking back to her room.
carter raised his eyebrow seeing her awake this early. "you're not an early bird," he mumbled.
the dirty blonde rolled her eyes. "and what are you doing awake?"
"peeing," he hummed.
"me too."
carter still stared at her and in the quiet of the upstairs, he heard the faint sounds coming from her computer where her bedroom door was cracked open. his glanced flicked that way. "are you watching hockey?"
"no."
"then why does it sound like hockey?"
"uh..i don't know," blaire really couldn't lie her way out of this one. her brother pushed her door open wider, squinting at the video playing on her computer. they were still at half time and the timing really couldn't be worse because they were showing macklin doing his halftime interview.
the girl internally face palmed. shit.
"are you..watching world juniors right now?" carter looked at his sister. blaire's face had guilty written all over it. "i thought you guys broke up?" he asked when she didn't respond.
"we did. we are. we're still broken up. i just..i dunno.."
"you just.."
"i know it's stupid," blaire mumbled. "i just..i don't know. am i not allowed to watch him succeed still from afar?"
"no. you are. have you tried reaching out to him?" carter raised his eyebrow. blaire flushed and then shook her head.
"no, that's taking it too far. i just..i don't know. it's like me checking in on him every now and then. just to make sure he's doing okay."
mack was talking about how the game was going so far, a bit sweaty and a little out of breath while he spoke. he looked so good.
blaire quickly erased that thought from her brain.
"tell me again why you guys broke up?" the younger blonde wondered.
"we just..we were going in different directions. we were literally gonna be across the country from each other. i didn't wanna..i wanted to save ourselves the hurt for when long distance got hard. i wanted to..leave before he could leave me," her voice quieted at the last part. it sounded so, so stupid to think that way, but after her mom dying and mason walking out too..it was all blaire knew.
she had to save herself this time around.
"blaire...you know not everyone is gonna just leave you. sometimes people do wanna stick around," carter said softly.
the figure skater's expression twisted like he was calling her out and in a way, he was. she just hated when he did. "mack and i were just..it was fun while it lasted. i mean have you even seen him now? i wouldn't be surprised if he already got in another relationship with some cool boston girl."
carter scoffed, but he didn't say anything. "i'm gonna pee and go back to bed. tell me if he wins when i wake up again," he left her be.
blaire shut her door, breathing out and mulling over her brother's words. he wasn't judging her, but she could feel everything he wasn't saying and how ridiculous this all probably seemed to him.
maybe she should just reach out.
but she couldn't. she wasn't going to. instead, blaire got herself comfortable in her bed again to finish the second half of the game that canada did in fact win. she chalked it up to her being the good luck charm while watching.
some of the canadian players skated by the camera and waved, shouting out their families back home or something. when blaire saw mack skate by her breath caught in her throat. he was all smiley, a bit sweaty, but the happiest she's ever seen him. he waved with both hands and mumbled a "let's fucking go!"
she couldn't help but smile seeing him so happy. they may have been broken up, but that didn't mean she wasn't gonna cheer him on from the sidelines still.
THREE.
"are you just dragging me along to this so you can see mack?" carter raised his eyebrow, his gaze flicking to blaire's where she stared ahead while driving down the freeway. the dirty blonde flushed but didn't meet her brother's questioning look.
"no. you like hockey. didn't you say you wanted to go to the draft?"
"like yeah but i don't care that much," carter shrugged. blaire huffed. he was always trying to make things more harder for her. "well, i thought it'd be fun for us to hang out since you never come to the states. it'll be fun."
"i am more than excited to hang out with you, but i also know you and you're gripping the steering wheel so tight your knuckles are white. are you sure i'm not also here to be moral support because mack's in your close proximity for the first time since you guys broke up last year?"
the thing about little brothers was that they always called their siblings out in the worst times. blaire eyed him as a warning. "stop."
"i'm not trying to poke at you, b. i'd be freaked too if my ex was most likely getting drafted to the city i went to school in. that's like..weird fate or some shit," carter laughed lightly.
the girl grimaced. when she heard carter put it that way it did..sort of..seem like fate was trying to bring her and mack back together. truly, what were the chances that the san jose sharks had the 1st overall pick and mack was most definitely being drafted 1st? slim.
she just..she needed to be there. she needed to hear it live with her own ears that he was getting drafted to the san jose sharks. plus, the tickets were cheap and they'd be hidden somewhere in the upper deck where no one could even make out their faces.
lindsey told her that if mack did get drafted to san jose then maybe blaire needed to take it as a sign to get back together with him. those words had rooted themselves deep in the dirty blonde's mind for the past month now because what if she did get back together with him?
what if she let her walls down and let him back in? what if she pushed all of her fears aside and told herself that he wasn't gonna walk away from her like everyone else in her life did?
she shook the thoughts away for now as they rolled into the massive parking line. blaire hadn't been to vegas often, but she forgot how showy everything was. big lights reflected off the tall, shiny buildings and there was always something going on. she kind of liked it.
the crew directed her inside and now came the true test—finding a parking spot. she made carter be her second set of eyes as they rode down the rows and rows of cars.
"wait, i see one," carter pointed to an empty spot 20ft away.
"perfect," blaire hummed, speeding up a little to claim it before another car took it from her.
once they were parked, the siblings headed towards the non immediate family guest entrance. "so like..what made them wanna build this?" carter glanced up at the large, screen filled sphere.
blaire giggled, "good question. to be unique?"
the security scanned their tickets and checked blaire's purse before letting them through. inside was even crazier as people rushed around to find friends, family, food, or their seats. on the floor, blaire saw all the tables for the different nhl teams. the screen was flashing different photos and videos of the prospects. it was all so huge and a bit overstimulating, especially with the screen stretching towards the ceiling.
carter led the way to their seats high in the upper deck with the players' extended families. blaire hardly recognized anyone, but they all looked excited to see their player walk the stage soon.
"see? cool, huh?" the figure skater nudged her brother.
"yeah, it's pretty cool. i just can't really comprehend the concept of a building like this," his eyes flicked across everything.
"honestly, me neither."
blaire kept an eye on the crowd and any familiar faces. all the prospects must've been closer to the stage with their families because she didn't see any family that belonged to mack yet.
she did see who she was pretty sure was samy hughes. sometimes her and samy would cross paths back when she used to skate more frequently and they'd talk a bit. she probably didn't really remember blaire though because she was older than her. all blaire really knew from instagram was that she played at the university of michigan for soccer and was dating will smith who got drafted last year and played for boston college.
from the corner of her eye, carter snapped some photos on his phone and a tiny smile crossed blaire's features. he'd always say he wasn't impressed or wasn't having fun, but she knew deep down that he was and was loving every second. she didn't poke him about it though, not wanting to embarrass him.
the camera crew on the floor started booting on their feeds of the prospects. on the big screen, they feed came through and each player shyly/nervously waved. they might've looked confident and relaxed, but blaire knew they were definitely internally freaking out. mack always told her how nervous he would probably be when he got drafted.
she watched for him and after a few more boys, his familiar face came up. blaire swallowed, studying his calm demeanor and cheerful smile to the camera. his hair was tamed and his navy suit was pressed and fitted to his body. he looked so good.
"for someone who's gonna be the 1st pick, he looks pretty nonchalant," carter mumbled with a tiny laugh.
"he hides his emotions well," blaire hummed.
"do you think you're gonna try to talk to him?"
her gaze shot to his like he was insane. "uh..no. i mean, once he gets drafted he'll probably be swept away until like after. plus, i don't..i don't even know what i'd say. hey i drove all the way to vegas to watch you get drafted? congrats? that's next level weird ex girlfriend behavior," blaire shook her head and her brother scoffed. he liked scoffing when she made statements like that for some reason.
"it's not weird, b. you're not a weird ex girlfriend. you guys have history. you were friends before all of this anyway," carter shrugged.
the older girl didn't entertain the thought anymore. she just dropped it and carter seemed to take the hint so he didn't ask again.
the draft host came out twenty minutes later to kick things off. he kept things light and cheery to get the crowd going before introducing the san jose shark officials to the stage. blaire clasped her hands together, sucking in a nervous breath—once his name rolled off their tongues it was going to be real and he was going to be in her city.
"for the first overall pick of the nhl draft, the san jose sharks are proud to select macklin celebrini."
the entire sphere erupted in loud hollers and cheers. everyone around them was clapping and on their feet. blaire and carter quickly stood, clapping too. the video came back up and it showed macklin hugging all of his family before heading down the aisle to the stage.
someone took his suit jacket for him before he headed up the small steps. he sported such a wide and proud smile. blaire's heart squeezed. this was all he used to talk to her about when they were younger and how he dreamed of walking this stage when he was finally old enough. she would sit and listen to him and it would make her so happy how bright his face got anytime he talked about things like this.
now he was finally living it.
when he put on the jersey, the crowd got louder. they posed for a picture before he got ushered off the stage to get all of the media and pr done backstage.
it was over as fast as it started, but blaire's heart was still pounding in her ears.
macklin celebrini in san jose. she really couldn't believe it and a part of her wondered if he had ever looked her up here and there and knew he'd be coming to her college city.
it was a bit embarrassing how butterflies erupted in her stomach at that thought. right next to those butterflies though was the reality and every nagging thought she tried to stand up to. he'll walk away from you. he'll find someone better. he won't stick around because no one does. he'll leave you like your mom did. he'll never talk to you ever again like mason does.
no matter how hard blaire tried, she just couldn't escape those anxious thoughts. they were a part of her. they protected her from anything bad ever happening again.
FOUR.
it was definitely such a bad decision to go to the game—like close to one of the worst decisions blaire has made—but she hadn't even looked mack up in months. this was progress. plus, it wasn't like she wasn't allowed to not go. the san jose sharks were an extremely popular team and everyone in the bay loved them. it would be weirder if she didn't go to at least one game.
the week had been long after two exams and being away the weekend before for a competition, so blaire deserved this. she needed to get out anyway.
it wasn't like she would even be looking for him anyway. most days it slipped her mind that he was in the same city again...
but sometimes she went to the grocery store kind of hoping she'd run into him or at least catch a glimpse of him from afar.
beside the fact, lindsey was excited to go and they managed to get blaire's roommate maya to tag along. lindsey called it a "girl's night" and blaire definitely needed one of those. she'd been so wound up with exams and skating that she couldn't really remember the last time she took a breath to slow down.
the girls got seats in the lower bowl fairly close to the glass. lindsey was excited that she could see everything and talked maya's ear off about the player positions and the plays so she had a brief understanding of what was happening. the sharks were on the ice warming up and checking out the fan posters.
blaire's eyes subconsciously flicked around for mack's 71. she found him on the other side of the ice with one of the other rookies and samy's boyfriend, will. they were laughing and smiling at one another, probably passing jokes.
when they skated around the rink and when they got closer to blaire's section, the girl shrunk further down in her seat. she ducked her head down, looking at her phone as they skated by. someone nudged her leg, "is that him?" lindsey whispered.
blaire's eyes peaked above the other people's heads. she watched mack get further and further from their section. "uh, yeah," she mumbled.
lindsey's gaze went back to him like she was studying him. "are you trying to like..talk to him?"
"oh, no. no. no. we're not..it's not like that anymore. we haven't talked in like a year and a half," the dirty blonde mumbled.
"okay. just wondering. if i were you though, i'd be dying to get him back," lindsey chuckled.
the figure skater found his 71 again. he was now shooting pucks at the other net. it was hard to deny the way her stomach flipped seeing him this close again. she just brushed her friend's comment off and luckily, lindsey dropped the subject for the rest of the night.
the sharks were down 2-1, but mack had been playing his best all night. for being a rookie, he fit right in with the vets and glided across the ice like he owned it. he was fast, pushed back hard, and never hesitated when he had the puck in his possession. blaire was more than impressed with how much skill he's gained since last watching him play for boston.
samy's boyfriend was also really good and they were like a dynamic duo when they were on the ice together. she wondered if she was anywhere in the crowd.
after the 2nd period, blaire got up to use the bathroom and get a snack. the line wasn't too long, so she leaned against the wall and scrolled her phone. she felt someone else press against the wall behind her. blaire shifted so she wasn't taking up as much space—when she looked over her shoulder to see who it was, she paused.
samy stood behind her also on her phone. the figure skater flushed, debating if she should say hi. it'd been a long time since her and samy interacted so she didn't know if she'd even remember her. blaire decided to push her luck anyway.
"hi, samy," she caught the older girl's attention. samy's head snapped up. "hi," she smiled, scanning blaire's features and the recognition slowly came.
"wait, you look really familiar," samy said.
"i think we used to be at the same competitions from time to time and at the rink when we were younger. i'm blaire. i figure skate," blaire explained. she watched samy's eyes widen like a light bulb going off.
"oh my god. you're right. i do know you. it's been so long. how are you? you go to school around here, right?"
"yeah, santa clara university. i'm good. how are you? how's soccer?"
"it's been so great. i love it at michigan. you probably know this, but i'm here for will," the brunette grinned and blaire nodded. "yeah, i figured. how is he?"
"he's good. he's finding his footing still, but he's really liking it. he's got his friend mack figuring it out with him," samy giggled.
blaire stilled at the mention of mack. of course samy would know mack by now. she debated bringing up the history, but the line moved and it was blaire's turn for the bathroom. "that's really good, i'm glad. hey, it was good running into you. let me know when you're in san jose again. i'd love to catch up more," blaire squeezed her arm.
samy quickly nodded, "of course, yes. wait, let me get your number."
the girls exchanged numbers before blaire waved goodbye. she went into the stall with a smile. if she couldn't reconnect with mack, then at least she could reconnect with an old friend. and maybe connecting with samy would connect her back to mack at some point.
the sharks lost the game 2-1, but they still put on a good effort. blaire could tell mack was disappointed as he skated down the line congratulating the other team for the win. his head hung lower and his expression was more set than when he was more cheery before the game.
"if we go now, we can catch the bus back to campus," lindsey nudged her shoulder.
blaire collected her things and watched as mack disappeared down the tunnel as she followed the crowd out of the stands. maybe the good luck only worked when she was watching him through the screen.
THE 1 TIME SHE WAS ACTUALLY CHEERING HIM ON FROM THE SIDELINES
the arena was packed with fans from across the world as the announcers introduced team canada and team slovenia in the first round. the players skated on and people were on their feet cheering them on. they waved their home country flags high and proud.
in the mix, blaire waved her own canadian flag and hollered until her throat was sore. beside her, charlie and aiden were also screaming at the top of their lungs for their number 71 down on the ice. when he came out, their section got louder. his parents brought cardboard cut outs of his head and pressed them against the glass.
the brunette skated by, smiling wide and waving to all of them. blaire grinned, watching as he did a lap and came back around the next time, specifically looking at her. he tapped his stick against the glass three times which was his way of acknowledging her when he was on the ice. it was their thing since shattuck.
the dirty blonde blushed deeply. she sported his san jose sharks jersey she just insisted her brought on the trip and paired it with a canadian hockey hat just so people knew who she was rooting for. on her left, charlie nudged her shoulder. she met the younger girl's smiling gaze.
"it's good to have you back," her words warmed blaire's heart.
"it's good to be back."
—
canada never let up any goals the entire game. instead, they scored 4 and slovenia couldn't manage to get it back in either of the periods. when the timer ran out, canadian fans jumped up. the boys tackled one another in excitement and celebration. people started waving their flags again and the whole arena was screaming red.
charlie was jumping on blaire's shoulder. the girls started jumping around together, a wave of happy emotions taking over the crowd.
mack came back to the glass with the biggest smile. his family shouted congratulations at him, but the only person he was looking at was blaire. she touched her hand to the glass, sending him a loving smile. he pointed to her and then showed a puck he was hiding in his hand meaning he was going to toss it over to her.
she reached up as it flew over the glass. it landed in her hands a second later and when she met mack's gaze again, he was already looking at her still. it was too loud to hear what he was saying, so instead, he pointed to the tunnel meaning he'd meet them all in the lounge when he was changed and done with press.
blaire clutched the puck close to her. she used to have a collection of these whenever mack won a game. he'd toss her a puck and then she'd go home to write the date and what game it was so she'd remember.
she couldn’t wait to start her new collection.
they waited in the family lounge for another hour before the door opened and mack came in. blaire hung back, letting his family hug him and congratulate him first. she loved seeing how happy they were for him and their praise had him glowing.
when they stepped back and mack found blaire's gaze, he was going to her instantly. she was in his strong arms in seconds. he held her close, pressing his face into the crook of her neck. he breathed her in. "i'm so proud of you," she mumbled.
"couldn't have done it without you," mack hummed.
"you definitely could have. i was just the added bonus," she giggled. the hockey player pulled back a bit to see her face, pushing some loose strands of hair away from her face. "definitely not. you'll always be my good luck charm."
her stomach flipped in a good way. he pressed a soft kiss to her lips, not caring that his entire family was still in the room. blaire blushed deeply, indulging his kiss for a few moments before gently pushing him away. aiden whistled and blaire saw charlie smack him on the arm.
"keep it pg," the older boy teased.
"shut up," mack muttered.
they laughed. blaire missed the banter and all the teasing from his siblings. it was so good to be back. instead of watching quietly from the sidelines, she could watch loud and proud now.
+ 1 BONUS OF MACK WATCHING BLAIRE FROM THE SIDELINES
honestly, it was probably for the better that mack never looked blaire up on anything because he'd been scrolling google and instagram for the past thirty minutes now reading about her recent competitions since starting college. he just couldn't close the tabs even if he wanted to.
after figuring out san jose had the first draft pick this summer and hearing all the talk about him getting picked first, he remembered that blaire was committing to a college out west—he just couldn't remember if it was the one in san jose.
when he saw her name up in the headlines and being named one of the best skaters on the team his stomach flipped. she was ranked 5th in the country and 1st at santa clara university after taking over the highest freestyle program score since 1999.
a soft sigh escaped his lips as he watched past clips of her meets back. she was always the best in his eyes, but she definitely had gotten even better since starting college. she glided seamlessly across the ice and her turns were perfect.
mack didn't really believe in the whole "it's fate" stuff, but he was kind of starting to knowing that him and blaire had a good chance of being in the same city again. maybe this could be his chance to get back together with her.
they broke up because of the distance but now that there wouldn't be anymore distance..
the hockey player tried not to get his hopes up. he hadn't even talked to blaire since a year ago and he wouldn't even know what to say if he did see her again.
hi? how've you been? why did you break up with me?
the brunette shook his head. he needed to stop reading up about her before aiden or charlie bursted in unannounced. he went to click out of the tab when he saw santa clara was actually in an active meet at washington state university.
against his better judgement, mack clicked on the link. it opened a new tab on his computer and the stream booted up to the women's freestyle currently happening. one of the girls from washing state was on and it looked like she was doing well. her score was pretty high already which meant she hadn't missed much and was going for the higher scoring jumps.
mack saw the list of girls on deck and he immediately spotted blaire's name right after this one. he definitely shouldn't have been watching this, but he couldn't tear his eyes away. the washington state girl finished strong and waved up to the crowd before skating off.
the camera panned to blaire taking her lap onto the ice.
mack hadn't seen her on anything since breaking up, so he studied her closely. she looked the same maybe a little older? still the same girl he's known since they were kids though. her expression was set and he watched as she took a few deep breaths to calm her nerves.
when she tapped her skates against the ice and patted her thighs twice, the boy grinned. he once knew her pre performance ritual by heart and tended to do it in the stands with her whenever he was at one of her meets. he was glad to know it hadn't changed since.
the music started and blaire began. anytime mack watched her skate he was amazed at how graceful she moved. it always seemed like it took no effort for her to do those crazy jumps and dizzying spins.
blaire was basically mastered in all of the triple jumps, so her maximum point values were higher than a lot of the other girls competing. being so trained in the triple jumps always got her further ahead in the scoring because not many girls attempted triple jumps. the last time mack knew, she was trying to get her quad axel.
he watched her land 3 of the 7 she needed to complete. anytime she leapt off the skate, mack held his breath in fear that she'd fall if he even so breathed.
in her 4th jump, the boston forward could tell she was gearing up to attempt the quad axel. not many women had the quad axel just because of how hard it was and how many spins were needed for it to count. mack held his breath when she lifted off the air and the commentators went silent.
he counted her revolutions in his head.
when he counted 4.5 her skate touched back down almost effortlessly. there was a slight wobble, but she didn't tumble at all. even through the video, mack could hear the crowd erupt into heavy cheers.
"holy shit," he mumbled in disbelief.
he couldn't believe she could do it now.
her score flew higher even with minor deductions.
for her last 3 jumps, she kept it simple to not risk any more points. when blaire finished the entire program, her jaw dropped at the fact that she landed her quad axel. mack couldn't help but clap for her through the computer.
she skated off the ice, jumping into her coach's arms and waving down to her teammates who were running to congratulate her for landing everything cleanly.
the boy flushed seeing her so happy.
maybe next time he'll actually get to be there and not just through the computer screen.
could you write blaire or bella accidentally walking in while Mack/matthew are filming spittin chicklets or any podcast
blaire walking in on mack while he’s on a zoom call for empty netters with dan and chris.
this would be funny because i think dan and chris would ask mack how she’s doing and then she coincidentally comes into his room to show him this tiktok she saw completely forgetting he’s on a call. mack gets all blushy while dan and chris chirp them for a few minutes.

“your girlfriend, blaire stevenson? she’s a figure skater with some of the top qualifying scores for the olympics right?” dan asked and macklin quickly nodded. “aw, look. he’s already smiling,” chris teased which reddened the hockey player’s cheeks even more.
“she’s had a crazy good season so far. she is definitely projected to make the olympic team which is honestly insane, but she is really good so it’s not that insane,” mack could go on and on about blaire, but he reframed from just rambling. the older guys smiled though.
“hey, that’s awesome though. she’s only..19? if she makes it, are you gonna drop everything to go see her?” chris half joked half asked.
“i mean i kind of feel like i’d have to. you think they’d let me?” all of them laughed that time.
macklin didn’t hear his door opening with all of the banter until he saw blaire coming into frame with a grin on her lips and her phone in hand. “babe, look at this. i’m literally dying,” blaire came up to his side, not even realizing her boyfriend was still on a call.
dan and chris didn’t say anything but they were smiling still watching the younger player blush and acknowledge his girlfriend. “i’m still on call,” he whispered to blaire. her gaze shot to him and then finally to his computer set up. “oh shit! i’m sorry. i’m so sorry. i don’t know why i thought you were done. oh my god. hi,” she waved to the brothers on the screen.
macklin laughed, quickly wrapping his arm around her waist while blaire burned in embarrassment. “hi blaire, no worries. it’s good to see you,” chris chuckled.
“hi. wow, i’m embarrassed. i got too caught up in showing mack a tiktok,” the girl flushed.
“we were actually just talking about you believe it or not. we were grilling mack about you making the olympic team for italy in a few months,” dan explained and blaire’s red cheeks went from embarrassed to blushing. she squeezed mack’s arm, “oh boy. i can’t imagine what he was saying.”
“hey, it was good things. i was saying how impressive and insane it’d be if you made it,” the boy informed.
“we asked him if he’d drop everything to fly out to watch you,” chris winked. mack’s hold on blaire’s waist tightened as she flushed and pulled her hand through his messy hair. “i don’t doubt it. i’d just say good luck getting passed coach warsofsky.”
“that’s what i said. i feel like i could pull some strings,” the boy grinned up at her. “good to know you’d drop it all for me,” she quickly kissed his lips before pulling away from his hold so she wasn’t interrupting any longer than she needed to. the boy frowned when she left his arms.
“i better let you finish. it was good seeing you guys. have fun on the rest of your interview,” blaire waved to the screen and blew a kiss to mack before leaving his room.
because mack and blaire were more private with their relationship, the fans went crazy with that small snippet of them when the interview was uploaded a week later.

the local bar downtown was filled with all of its friday regulars—the hockey players. team bonding outside of practice was an important must this season, hoping it'd boost morale and camaraderie during the harder times. goodrow scouted the bars earlier in the season to find one that would let in the younger guys (and maybe pull a few strings to let them have a few drinks while promising they wouldn't get trashed.)
when they settled on one tucked away in one of the side streets, the friday bar tradition was born. the sharks packed themselves in every friday while everyone else lit up at their presence. the bartenders knew their orders by now and the other regulars were happy to see some of their favorite hockey players in their mixes. it was like the perfect balance, especially since the other regulars respected the players so much they never bombarded them with questions about hockey and crazy autographs. instead, they listened, got to know them as people, and talked about the most mundane things from the week.
this friday was no different. the bar was loud and rowdy. the guys were settling themselves in at the bar or in the back playing pool. some were at the darts board trying not to poke each other's eyes out. the atmosphere felt light and the tension of the week eased itself off of everyone's shoulders. the end of the week was blaire's night of fun, so she oftentimes joined mack at the bar.
the wags were a bit too old for her to hang out with the whole night, so sometimes she jumped in on a game of pool with misa and graf or sat in the big open window at the front of the bar just people watching as they walked by on the street. when her and mack were out together, they tended to break off from one another to do their own thing. blaire knew mack appreciated his time with his buddies and she never minded letting him do his thing. she was his guest after all and it was more about them knowing they were in close proximity of each other that they liked on night's out.
she sat at the bar with misa and graf talking about something she did in class when she felt a gentle, but strong arm wrap itself around her shoulders. she could smell him before she saw him and a soft smile spread across her lips. "hi," she clasped her hands around his forearm.
"hi," he pressed a kiss to the side of her head while misa and graf had smug smiles on their lips watching the couple interact. "hey mis. hey graf," mack greeted them as well soon after. they all exchanged a quick dap up.
"someone's in a good mood," collin hummed. mack shrugged, pulling his other hand around blaire once he set his drink onto the bar. "it's a good night. it's warm and spirits are high."
"we played a round of pool and i finally won a game!" blaire quickly exclaimed. the three of them had been playing back and forth since september and it was nearly march meaning it took the girl almost the entire season to finally win a game of pool. she felt her boyfriend squeeze her tight, "congrats! i know you've been complaining about losing."
"i think she cheated but i'll let her have the win," michael gently ribbed making blaire kick him in the shin. "shut up."
the four of them shared a laugh. now that mack was behind her, blaire let herself lean into him and stretch her back out after having to slouch forward since the barstools didn't have any back to them. the boy welcomed her into his space, pressing another lazy kiss to her head.
michael and collin watched how relaxed and carefree their captain looked. after the olympics, he'd been so tightly wound wanting to pick up the pace and find more wins before the season ended. they liked getting to see him away from the noise of hockey and just be a normal 19-year-old for a few hours.
"maybe we should go pester toff and goodrow for a game," collin hummed, giving him and michael an out to let the couple have some time to themselves.
the two boys took their drinks with them, mumbling about finding them later as they disappeared into the crowd. blaire waved, giggling when she felt her boyfriend lean into her.
"what are you drinking?" mack looked at her glass.
"a spritz. want some?" she passed him the glass. mack wasn't a super fruity alcohol drinker, so he only took a few sips before giving it back. "it's kind of watered down," he mumbled.
"yeah, i've been just sipping it so the ice is melting. what do you have?" she looked at his glass next to hers.
"whiskey."
blaire tsked slightly, "i don't know how you drink just whiskey like that."
"it's an acquired taste i guess. i don't know how you drink fruity drinks all the time," he teased back.
"acquired taste," the dirty blonde hummed.
the forward leaned down to capture her lips with his. kissing in public wasn't super out of the blue, but most times her and mack saved their loving for when they were at home and away from prying eyes and pictures that could end up on social media. she didn't push him away though, indulging his wish and the butterflies she felt in her stomach. "you're gonna kiss off my lip gloss," the girl mumbled in the beat of space when they pulled away for air.
"sorry. just wanted to kiss you," mack smiled. his brown locks fell over his eyes and it was hard to be mad at him when he looked at her like that, especially when she could see remnants of her lip product on his lips.
"i'll just have to reapply," she dug through her purse for her lip gloss and liner.
"can i do it?"
his question caught her off guard, "do you know how to?"
"you underestimate how much i watch you get ready or flip down the sun visor in the car for the mirror to reapply," her boyfriend laughed. blaire trusted him though so she let him have it, swiveling on the stool so she was fully facing him.
he pushed into her space a bit more, getting comfortable between her legs as he pulled off the lip liner cap. the figure skater watched him carefully, finding his gentle gaze as he tilted her jaw up and started lining the outer rim of her lips.
her heart was pounding a mile a minute. the gesture felt so intimate and even though they were in a bar full of people, she suddenly could only see and feel mack right in front of her. the people around them faded.
he led the rhode liner down her bottom lip, filling in exactly how she would've done it if she was doing it herself. he had been watching her. she was warm inside at the idea that mack observed her close enough to know how she applied her lip products.
he carefully blended it by rubbing his thumb over her lips. she liked how focused he looked like he wanted to get it right. he reached for the actual lip gloss which was the rhode peptide lip boost that blaire recently got on after watching people on tiktok rave about it. he did a good layer across her bottom lip and finished with a light layer on the top. blaire was thoroughly impressed that he did it just like she did.
she pressed her lips together to spread the lip boost out while mack leaned back to admire his work. "thoughts?" he wondered.
blaire opened up the camera to see. it honestly looked perfect. her lips looked full and hydrated again. "wait, you did so good. i'm actually impressed."
"i told you i know what i'm doing. i wanna kiss you again because they look so good, but i don't wanna mess it up," he chuckled, putting the stuff back into her purse.
she flushed. she didn't really care about messing it up because kissing him was worth it. "c'mere just kiss me," she pulled him back in.
this time their kiss was a bit more passionate. blaire could taste the whiskey on mack and he was definitely going to have hydrated lips after this. when they broke apart again, sure enough, the hockey player had it stained on his lips more than before. "you're being so affectionate tonight," she hummed.
"just loving on you. i feel like we always drift away from each other when we go out," mack finally scooted one of the stools closer to hers so he didn't have to stand anymore. their knees brushed together and he slid his hand up her thigh.
"you're having fun and hanging out with the guys. plus, i thought you didn't really like pda."
"i mean not really, but doesn't mean i can't come show you i love you and be near you," the boy said and blaire grinned. "i'm not complaining at all. i love getting to be close," she ran her fingers through his unruly locks of hair. he needed a haircut soon.
"tell me when you wanna leave. we don't have to stay until they leave," mack squeezed her thigh.
"even though it's friday, i am getting kind of tired," blaire tapped her phone to get it to pull up the time. 11:57.
"you wanna go?"
"i don't wanna pull you away if you don't wanna go," she said. mack liked his time out and being with his friends, so she felt bad pulling him away from them. "you're not pulling me away. i did my fair share of talking for the night. plus, i prefer being with you anyway."
she giggled, "if you're sure. i'll finish this and then we can leave?"
he nodded, smiling. blaire didn't have much left of her spritz. she got the last few sips down and then flagged the bartender over for the check that mack graciously payed for by putting her on his tab. he took one last swing of his whiskey before taking blaire's hand and helping her off the stool. the couple said goodbye to the few teammates they saw on their way out before deciding to walk back to mack's apartment since it was so nice out still.
"what are will and samy doing tonight?" the dirty blonde wondered.
"samy had this charity event for soccer that will went to. i think they were gonna crash at her place."
"so we have an empty apartment all to ourselves?"
"yup," mack's gaze slid sideways while his girlfriend smirked.
they were a little tipsy, but her heart was still racing after that intimate little gesture mack pulled back at the bar. she could still feel the way his thumb rubbed along her lip and the way his hand held her jaw in place.
"what?" the boy raised his eyebrow.
"nothing," she mumbled but he knew her better than that.
he picked up their pace to get to his apartment faster. when they made it inside and waited for the elevator, he tipped her chin up and pressed his lips to hers. blaire was giggly, clutching his shirt to bring him closer. "i love you, you know that?" he breathed when they pulled away.
"i do. i love you."
in the privacy of the apartment, mack really let himself love on blaire like he wanted to.
