For ease of access and archival purposes I’m reposting some of my CuriousCat asks on my blog here.
Q: I really like reading your views on all the character & Anzu so far hhhh and I'm going to contribute too!
What do you think about Madara and Anzu as a whole? I'm interested to know how you view and feel about them //v\\
(my heart aches for them)
A: MADAAN I SEE SOMEONE HAS GOOD TASTE. These two have the most complicated canon relationship in my eyes. At first I was interested in them because I love the childhood friend trope but then I fell face first into Madara’s ulterior motives.
I think Madara did indeed approach Anzu to use her but later on that feeling kind of just evolved into something else. Because otherwise he would never want Anzu to experience a fun youth, constantly worrying about her and telling her to enjoy things other than work. Madara says that he wanted to raise Anzu into a proper producer so that she could bring Trickstar up to destroy and hurt Akatsuki, to exact revenge on Akatsuki for hurting Kanata/Chiaki, but if he actively begins to push her away from working so hard, chances are he won’t achieve that goal.
Madara and Anzu are polar opposites. Madara is the outgoing and loud type while Anzu is the restrained and quiet type. Madara also likes using underhanded methods of getting his way while Anzu is pure and straight-forward according to Kuro. However, Madara is one of the only people at Yumenosaki that Anzu is strict with. She constantly ignores him calling at her which only makes Madara louder and more obnoxious to her; when he tries to pet her head, she tells him to stop despite liking being pet by other students before; she calls him abnormal and thought it was weird she couldn’t remember him; in Wishing Live she even pulls out a paper fan to threaten him with for disturbing the hospital guests.
It was also kind of strange that Madara seemed to remember Anzu when he himself admits that they were never close and only played together a couple of times. But I suppose that might just be because he has very good memory because he does seem to remember a lot about Anzu, always quick to tell anecdotes of something embarrassing she did. As a kid Madara always played house with other kids and always wanted to be the mother/mama, as he had with Kanata. Madara laments that Anzu refused to call him Mama to the very end which could be a good reason to remember her (someone write me that fic).
Madara also refuses to call Anzu producer, both in ! and !! even when asked, which shows that he sees Anzu as a normal girl. Like everyone else at Yumenosaki, Anzu keeps everyone at arms length and from her attitude with Madara, him even more so. Despite that, him and Natsume were the only ones who noticed her fear of losing her place in Wishing Live.
With the way Madara feels about himself and his role as the ‘anti-hero’, he makes it quite clear that he believes he’s undeserving of any true love (platonically and/or romantically). He tells Kuro that he hates the development in Akatsuki’s story and that they, like him, have hurt others and walked the wrong path, thus they lost the qualification to have dreams and ideals. He has a strong conviction and believes right and wrong in black and white terms, meaning he also thinks he is condemned as well. I believe that this strong feeling is what holds him back from trying to hurt Anzu onesidedly because he knows she’s innocent. Though despite that, he can no longer take back his act as her ‘helpful childhood friend’ and further condemns himself. This is also evident in !!, where in the Double Face event he uses this particular act of evil as an example of his villainy even though he had done worse things from a legal standpoint, like blackmailing students and offering to commit murder.
I just wanna let everyone know I love MadaAn too thanks for coming to my TED talk.
