laura’s pale palms

you know, she might have been laura palmer in her last life / you know, that feeling on the underground tube where the person sitting next to you / gets all shaken up and blurred in the reflection on the window across / and you have to remind yourself they’re perfectly still, headphones in, beside you, / inconsiderate with the shared armrest // the tube comes out the tunnel, five long minutes of ‘daylight’ gloom / you know, that shade of purple where they sky feels dark but everything is still / silhouetted against it / black marker pen on a nearly translucent hand / you know, that kate bush ‘hounds of love’ purple // the tube relieves itself in a stream of commuters trickling out the shuddering doors / and you can count the people left in the carriage on one hand / but the hand keeps changing shape, changing colour, wont stay still / and you forget everyone else can still see you, even when re-entering a tunnel / darkens the seats once more // the bold lady by the door comes up to you, touches your hand / younger but motherly, and tells you through purple-painted lips / that she loves your style // ‘thanks, i used to be laura palmer’ / ‘well who are you know, darlin?’ // she’s a bauhaus song in a trenchcoat / you know, copenhagen’s twitching right eye / or the charm bracelet i found in a waiting room / ‘sorry, this is my stop’ //
