“You know smoking is bad for you, like, I’m talking cancer bad.” You shouted from underneath the tree. He was sitting on the other side of the lawn, rolling his eyes as he took a puff.
“The goal is to die.”
“Well then you have a one way ticket to death.” You laughed.
You never talked to Johnny unless you guys were alone, it’s not that you guys didn’t want to be seen together, it was just the way things ended up. This had been going on for a few months now. You doing homework under the tree in the courtyard on campus, him smoking a cigarette on the other side. And casual conversation would just flow between you guys, as if you were old friends. But, in reality, you didn’t know each other at all, he probably didn’t even remember your name.
“Well, as much as I wouldn’t like to cut our sweet time together short, ya girl has class in about 10 minutes. Have a good one, Johnny.” Backpack in hand, you left the hidden courtyard, and you hear a quiet ‘you too’ come from him as he snuffs out the cigarette.
Lately, Johnny had been missing from the courtyard. Not just lately, but for a week or two. There’s no way you could’ve missed him every time you went, something had to be up. As you headed towards your dorm, you take a look to your left and there, lying unconscious on the ground is the boy in question. His face bloodied, clothes ripped, a gash on his arm. You sprint to his figure; thankfully he was still breathing.
“Johnny!” You tried to shake him awake without hurting him too much. “Johnny! Johnny Seo!” His eyes shot open in a panic, his breathing increased.
“What is going on—ow..” He moaned as he tried to sit up, whilst holding his side.
“Sh shh, get up.” He shook his head, clearly still out of it. You sighed, you needed to get him somewhere, not a hospital. Johnny once told you that he hated them after you asked if he was going to get his cut on his neck checked out.
As soon as he got up, you tried to rush him to your apartment, earning odd looks from strangers as you hastily walked with a beat-up Johnny in hand.
When you reached your apartment, Johnny fell to the couch. You swiftly broke out your first aid kit and started to clean up the bloodied boy. His face hadn’t been hurt too bad, just a bloody nose and a few cuts, but it was the gash on his arm that worried you. From what you could see, it wasn’t all that deep, but it had to sting like hell.
“Thank you, you didn’t have to.” Johnny huffed as you put a bandage on his arm.
You didn’t respond, knowing he wouldn’t keep up the conversation as he started to drift off into a sleep.

It had been a few days since you found Johnny, he asked if he could stay at your place for a week or two, he would help pay for whatever you needed, he just wasn’t in the condition or mindset to move. You trusted that he wouldn’t do anything, even if he refused to tell you what had happened.
A few weeks turned into about a month. He was living at your house practically, it was almost boyfriend like. As much as you loved having him around (and trust me, you LOVED having a beautiful boy to come home to and joke around with), you needed an explanation. You were confused, Johnny and you weren’t even friends, but instead just roommates at this point.
“Look… Y/N. It’s a situation I don’t want to get you involved with. I have history with some of the boys that roughed me up a bit, they weren’t happy with that history and decided to take revenge.” He sighed as he rubbed his hand over his face. “I can’t involve you, it would make you worry.”
“Why does it matter if I worry? I just need an explanation. I enjoy having your presence, I really do. I’m just so confused, and I let you stay in my home, the least you can do is offer me something simple”
“Fine,” He took in a sharp breath. “My brother, before he died, owed them a bit of money. I helped pay what I could at the time, hoping my brother would come up with the rest, but he never did. My uncle ended up paying the rest, but they still weren’t happy with my family. They left everyone alone, except for me. Which is why I attended college out of state. On top of that, I was cleaning up myself up from the mess I was in high school, I promise you I don’t do that shit anymore, don’t think badly of me Y/N.
“I was doing good, but they started showing up. They had found me! They started threatening me if I didn’t do certain things, which I was gone from the courtyard for those 2 weeks. I didn’t want them to find you, I had to keep you safe. I know we don’t know each other well at all. This probably sounds so weird. I just had to take care of these guys, and then they beat me up, you found me, and here we are.” He moved closer to you, sitting directly next to you on the couch.
“That doesn’t explain why you’re now living in my apartment…” You notified him, your tone not the happiest.
“Ah… yeah… That. I dunno, I just kind of wanted to stick around you.” He said sheepishly. His eyes avoiding any direct eye contact with you. “Guess you could call it a crush?”
“This is totally not the way to go about it, Johnny.” He laughed bit. “You usually ask for my number, get to know me, take me on a date, start dating, then live with me. You skipped 5 steps.”

Months has passed since Johnny confessed to you. You guys hung out a lot, though you never responded to his feelings. You were scared and you knew you liked him a lot. It wasn’t until one day when he pressed for an answer. In the middle of one of your guys’ ‘coffee dates’ (they weren’t really dates, but what else do you call them?) he asked about it, out of the blue.
You just kind of fidgeted in your seat, eyes wide, unsure what to say. “Uh… yes?”
“Yes? It wasn’t a yes or no question.” His face dropped, from a hopeful child to an annoyed teenager.
“Yes, I have feelings for you.” And in that moment, you swore he stopped breathing.
“Looks like that one way ticket to your heart wasn’t a waste after all, ay?”
