Hi UFYH, thanks for such an inspiring and well organised blog! My old apartment was very mouldy and unfortunately it spread to a lot of clothing, shoes, and furniture, when I moved, what I couldn't fix I threw out. It's been over a year since I moved into my current apartment and I'm noticing that some of my shoes are still carrying the same mould. Today I've taken them out of my wardrobe and put them in the sun. wiping them down isn't enough, do you have any tips to salvage them? Thank you!

Mold is really not something to mess around with. The sun is actually incredibly effective for killing things like mildew and hantavirus, of all things, so it's worth a shot. If they're fabric shoes, you can try running them through the wash with some bleach, but for other materials, or if the mold is too settled in, you may need to consider those items a loss.

One of my old apartments had a black mold situation (the landlord's boiler leaked and the water settled in between the walls), and aside from triggering asthma I never knew I had, it ruined about 20 pairs of my shoes. My renter's insurance covered the loss, but my heart still aches for my blue satin flats.
