There’s a video game on Steam called Don’t Starve Together. I haven’t played enough of it to tell you what the goal of it is (not starving, I guess?), but I can tell you one thing: make sure that you always have means to start a fire.
It’s crucial that you have a campfire ready or a touch at hand before it gets dark. Because if darkness comes, and you’re not illuminated, you will literally die. Killed by darkness, the game will tell you.
So unless you're playing Don’t Starve Together, the purpose of nighttime lighting should not be purely for survival. Lighting your apartment just for illumination is like wearing clothes just to cover up your body.
It's useful, yes, but past a certain point, it stops being the point.
