So I just finished Song of Achilles. Obviously, its very heartbreaking and emotional, which I expected. Very good read. I just expected more deep dive into their relationship. What makes them so special? Or rather what makes Achilles, the greatest warrior world has seen, the golden hero to be so attached to Patroclus? I expected more things where they were just them. Like I didn't see what makes them stick together in the first place. For example, Odyssus and Penelope are intelligent and that is what attracts them toward each other. What is it that brings Achilles and Patroclus together?? Achilles' decision to help Patroclus for skipping training just seems random. Like a prince who is bored and wants entertainment. So is his decision to name him a companion. It is never explored what they talk about, what they connect about or with, or the domesticity of knowing each other. Patroclus seems to be worshipping Achilles and thats the only perspective we see.
Also, I don't get why Patroclus is portrayed as someone helpless, colorless, interesting character. It gave me so much of Edward/Bella vibes. Like nobody sees him but Achilles. I am no expert on Greek Myth but I have read Illiad and he was a warrior in his own right.
I guess I just kinda expected deeper connection and emotions than what the book offered.
