MADISON|LST was one of the artists I photographed for CMJ last month at a Sofar Sounds session in New York City. Almost a month later, I’m still going over every song he performed that night in my head. A hip hop artist, MADISON|LST and his band played an acoustic set to a packed out living room that became one of the most memorable performances for me at CMJ week 2014. His lyrics took command of the room, like telling a story through music that will stick in your head, trying to remember and imagine that performance again weeks later as it was that night. There’s nothing like discovering new amazing music for the first time, it’s even better when it’s a live MADISON|LST Sofar Sounds session. Like MADISON|LST on FACEBOOK, listen on SOUNDCLOUD and follow on TWITTER. Also, keep an eye out for touring dates and subscribe to the LST mailing list at MADISONLST.com. This guy is just getting started.

In the wake of artists like Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J.Cole, we find ourselves floating on a life raft in a sea of formulaic imitations. The music industry’s Facebook status is perpetually “who’s next?,” and the public’s ever decreasing attention span only serves to make the media more frantic. Fortunately, an artist like Madison|LST stands in stark contrast to his contemporaries upon first listen, and upon first glance the sentiment is similar. Hailing from Whittier, California, Madison grew amidst West Coast rap, the DunkXChange, and Krump sessions in Paramount park near Long Beach. Though fully emerged in the sun-drenched, Californian lifestyle, his West Coast roots couldn’t repel the strength of outside influence. The likes of Eminem, Fabolous, Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes and Ludacris also played an integral roll in his development as a writer and wordsmith. But contrary to common assumption, his passion for music did not begin with rap.
At the age of 14, Madison ventured into the world of hip-hop by way of the Krump dance style that took the art/music world by storm from 2003 to 2006. In his off time at school, he learned to beatbox in order to practice dancing between classes, but the skill inevitably led him to the center of freestyle rap cyphers where he functioned as the keeper of the impromptu beatbox. Before long he found himself on the other side of the drums, as one of the MCs but his L.A. days were soon left behind for the greater northwest when he graduated high school and attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon. While there, he developed as an English major specializing in African American Literature, but outside of class his main pursuit was freestyling with classmates. By his junior year, he led Freestyle Fridays on campus from 10pm to nearly 5am Saturday mornings for 2 years, like clockwork, with few dates unaccounted for.
After graduating with a BA in English, LST moved to New York City where he began his career as an independent hip-hop artist. It was here in NYC that Madison developed a partnership with Gaucho Film that eventually led to the production of his debut music video “Who Knows.” After the video’s release and reception of over 55k+ Youtube views, Madison took time off to develop his craft with producers and mentors, further defining his sound and intentions in the music industry. This period of exploration culminated in a Kickstarter campaign that raised $25,000 to support the production of his first full-length project, his debut album, OBLIVION. Today, Madison stands armed with 2 new, polished music videos, that take his already impressive cinematic performance to the next level, as well as 10 track album wrought with a deep spectrum of emotion, and the enthusiasm for life that won him many loyal supporters even before the release of this first project. Stay tuned, and be a part of the journey with the rest of the LST family by subscribing to the mailing list below. In the meantime, enjoy OBLIVION. Play, share, repeat!

we don't feature a lot of hip-hop on this site, so when we do you know you've just gotta check it out. this guys flow is absolutely killer, it reminds me of nas' lost tapes album for some reason, although they rap about much different subjects, and he has a busta rasp to his voice that i'm digging hardcore. i've also heard he puts on some pretty killer dj sets around manhattan, so if you live in these parts you should go check him out.
