It’s much better to be without a family, and without an arm than to be a breeding whore. If you don’t like spoilers, please stop reading now. The types of female characters that are presented in Mad Max: Fury Road are: Type 1 – the ones who produce “mother’s milk”, who are very close to human-milking-cows with milking apparatus attached to their nipples. Would you want to be that character as a female? I doubt it. Type 2 – the very old and wrinkly female character who is kept a prisoner all her life, and rambles on endlessly at the sight of her captor. Would you want to be that character? I don’t think so. Type 3 – the beautiful, Victoria Secret looking models who are brides and the ones who will bare endless children for the butt ugly leader. Beautiful yes, stupidity implied in their glamorous looks, and their chastity belt, but would you want to be that character? Think not! Type 4 – Furiosa, who is childfree, family free and arm free. Intense and focused on her goal. Willing to sacrifice herself for others (very stupid brides for example). Now she seems like the character as a female you want to relate to her, think of how strong she is, and how determined and fearless she is, unlike the Victoria Secret brides, who are winy, helpless and dumb in comparison. As a result the only message your female brain gets is, “it’s good to be childfree and independent” embracing and maintaining a more masculine role in life. More masculine is good, feminine, childbearing, and beautiful is for breeding only and therefore bad.
I’m trying to downplay Mad Max: Fury Road, which in itself is a fantastic action film. This film’s strong characters and acting bring us a world that we can fully submerge in. I’ve enjoyed the visuals, fantastic graphics, acting, chases and the storyline. I fit in that age demographic that was young enough to see the original Mad Max on home VCR and now enjoyed this major blockbuster at IMAX. In accordance with wiki action film definition, all criteria such as “physical feats, extended fight scenes, violence, and frantic chases”, Mad Max 2015 nails it perfectly! It is a visually extraordinary, complex and absolutely “high octane fueled action blockbuster” that is enjoyable and breathtaking. Good guy wins over the bad guy, and we all go home happy and very satisfied, Hurray Hurray! But the subconscious message that masculine female is good, is sent to females everywhere. When will we see a strong Sarah Connor type character who will be strong, feminine, beautiful, intelligent, and a mother?
