Madney Week, Day One

Next to Your Heartbeat Where I Should Be

There are days when Maddie still misses helping people in a hospital rather than through a phoneline. She thinks it's in her blood – has to be in Buck's, too – this need to look out for another life. 

For her, Daniel was the start of that. Being a nurse was a way for Maddie to care for others the way that she hadn't been able to for her brother. 

It's that instinct that Maddie's tapped into as a mother as well. Or, tries to. She's told constantly that she's doing a good job so one of these days she hopes to stop second-guessing it.

Today, however, it's about taking care of her sometimes stupid boyfriend.

"You know, I'm used to Buck being the one who runs off with a dumb idea," Maddie says as she helps Chimney limp over to the couch on crutches.

He smiles sheepishly as he's lowered carefully and gets his leg propped up, which has been wrapped up in bandages, while Maddie sets the crutches aside. "When Hen comes knocking, Maddie, I can't leave her hanging."

Maddie goes to the kitchen to grab a glass from the cabinet. "Don't think Karen and I aren't planning on giving her some harsh words about it, too," she tells Chimney over her shoulder while filling it with water. 

"It will have been worth it," Chim tells her, then hisses when he moves his leg the wrong way.
