Self-released 1994 cassette, Learn To Say Goodnight, by Long Island trio Mad Planets.
Another NYC-area “Mad” band? Sure! This one is the debut release of indie pop band Mad Planets, fronted by Tara Emelye, who up until this release I’d mainly know as the editor of excellent zine Cupsize.
I recall taking a train out to Long Island for a Mad Planets show at the campus of SUNY Stonybrook, where Tara was then a student. Honeybunch (and I think one other band, I forget) were also on the bill, and it was fun to see a bunch of indie pop bands in a decidedly low-key space—really, just an open room off of a hallway.
My old band later played a gig with Mad Planets and The Poconos (feat Mike A of Caught In Flux), leading us to all get blurbed in the events section of Time Out New York as “a battle of the bands formed by shy zine editor types.” Guilty as charged!
