“i’m gonna be fine, uncle frank,” maeve gives him a watery smile, “i promise. and i’ll come home for christmas and any holiday i can.” she’d specifically asked to have a minute alone with frank so she could say her goodbyes without her father being a complete wreck. he kisses her forehead and she throws her arms around him, pressing her face into his chest, “promise me you’ll take care of him, okay? don’t let him get isolated or mopey without me.” she mumbles, sniffling back her own tears. she pulls away reluctantly after a moment and wipes at her eyes with her sleeve, “i’m gonna be late for my flight, i’d better go. thank you for everything, uncle frank. i love you.”

“awesome, i’m starving.” maeve is curled up in her favourite spot on karen’s couch, right next to the arm of it so she can prop her head up on her hand. “yeah, face masks would be fun! i’d love to have a girl’s night.” of course, maeve loves all of the time she spends with her father, and he’s usually a good sport about doing things like painting nails and wearing face masks (maeve knows he’s gone into a courtroom with colourful nails more than once), but nothing beats being able to talk to another girl about the troubles of being an almost-teenager. karen’s always been easy to talk to, and maeve is grateful to have her there when she needs her most. “like, movies and face masks, the whole thing. is that okay?”

maeve looks briefly horrified. “we’re definitely just as flammable as adults.” she’s standing as far away from the stove as she can be - whatever matt’s cooking that requires a big flame like that? she wants nothing to do with. “you could’ve set this apartment on fire. you could’ve set me on fire!” reluctantly, she returns to the fridge next to the stove where she’d been trying to grab a can of soda. “i hope it would make you feel bad, if you set me on fire. you don’t look sorry.”

“i don’t have to listen to you, y’know,” she crosses her arms over her chest with a frown, “i’m old enough to not need a babysitter. plus, i don’t really trust your judgment.” maeve drops into the chair at her father’s desk and blows out a sigh - she should be doing her homework, but instead she’s chosen to annoy frank as much as possible to kill time until her father returns from court. “you any good at math, mr. castle?” maeve might not like him, but she still has manners. “i could use some help with long division.”

“i’ll tell dad you threatened my life,” maeve shrugs, the remote already in her hands. “or i’ll tell aunt karen. she’ll kick your ass.” she changes the channel anyways, almost out of spite. maeve has always been one to rise to a challenge. she turns and looks at matt with a wide grin - her fists raised loosely by her face as if ready to spar. “you feelin’ lucky, punk?”

“i’m not kicking you,” maeve frowns, “i’m kicking your seat, and it’s only because i have literally no leg room.” she can’t believe she’s been left in the car with him. it’s highly irresponsible of her dad to have left her alone in the car with a mass murderer. “can you move your seat up?” maeve isn’t used to being relinquished to the back seat of foggy’s car - she’s always in the front. she doesn’t like this one bit. “i can’t believe we have to drive you.”

“absolutely not,” maeve feigns innocence, but the proof is right in front of her - she’s been folding laundry for the last little while. “i can’t believe you’d even ask.” she’s grinning despite the indignance in her voice as she balls up another pair of her father’s socks and flings them toward matt’s head. “how can you even tell they’re socks, anyways? do you just know as soon as they touch you, or what? do you have a sock spidey sense?”
