the thing is that having your Watcher fall in love with and or be otherwise deeply entangled with The Devil Of Caroc and then having her be present in Caed Nua at the beginning of Deadfiee, having her soul pulled into Eothas with the rest of them, is fun.

the stakes of it. she was taken like the rest of them, but her body hasn't turned to ash. she can go back. but should she? this may be the only way she'll ever be free. when you chase down Eothas and demand her soul back, you may do so so that you can lose her forever. what does she want? can you reach her soul, deep in that screaming vortex, and ask her? if you do reach her there, do you catch a glimpse of what she looked like when she was folk?

are you going to drag her bronze corpse with you through the entire archipelago? are you going to leave it behind?

Edér: You know, I've been wondering. You and Devil, how do you?...

Mae: Edér. You and I are not that kind of friends.

Edér: Noted.

Kana: You look happier, Devil. Or, er, I should say, you sound happier.

Devil of Caroc: Don't worry, Kana. I'm still the good old monster you know.

Kana: I only meant to say that I'm happy for you.

Hiravias: So the Watcher likes them cold and metallic! Now I see why there was never a spark between us.

Mae: Trust me, there are many reasons.

Hiravias: Of course! My beating heart, the warm blood in my veins, and the many, many hairs on my body.

Mae: Keep talking and I'll make two of the three go away.

if i may have two of 🔥 maevil and ylfwyn (showman voice) can you make ylfwyn EVEN EVILLER??

Maevil: YOU get the AU where their ages line up a little differently from canon and rookie Goldpact Knight Mae gets hired to hunt down The Devil Of Caroc. they have not gone through their respectice character arcs yet and Mae is A Teenager and they will inflict violence upon each other. I was going to say one of them dies but I'm kind of compelled by the version where they both survive (injured) and when they meet YEARS later in the White March they REMEMBER. and Devil's old body is gone but Mae still has the scars from her knife. you know.

Ylfwyn: you get: evil arranged marriage au. Ylfa grew up in the Living Lands aa the Chosen of Sapadal and a local leader. but times are tough and Aedyr is showing an interest in the Lands and to make sure this interest doesn't become violent, an alliance is solidified through an arranged marriage; a haemneg of a godlike and a deathguard, if you will. will these two embodiments of decay fall in love for real? and how much will it hurt when it turns out that Lödwyn DEFINITELY intends to use her new position to either usurp Ylfa's power or estrange her from Sapadal and kill them?

29. A kiss to the back of the hand

Devil speaks with her hands.

It's not hard to see why; her solid mask of a face doesn't leave much room for expression, though she manages to push even against that, conveying the rise and fall of her temper through small movements and eye rolls, the clicking of her machinery and the swirling of essence under her metal skin.

But her hands are intricate, flexible — as close to kith dexterity as it can get, and so much more alive for that. It's in watching them gesture, fidget, set a trap, pull a trigger, that Mae sees her the most clearly: the woman inside the machine, going through the same motions as fourteen years ago, even if her frame is different.

She keeps these thoughts to herself. Devil has enough to deal with as it is; it's not Mae's place to tell her how to feel about the golem.

Instead, she smiles against Devil's thumb as it runs across her lips in place of a kiss she can't give, then catches her hand and interlaces their fingers, kissing every knuckle before pressing her lips to the intricate runework on the back of Devil's palm.

Mae closes her eyes, lingering in the moment.

The metal is warm from her breath and the essence circulating through it, pooling in Devil's palm as the soul inside shifts to be closer to her. The bronze skin hums, saturated with energy, leaving an odd coppery taste in her mouth.

For her, of all people, it's not at all a surprise that love tastes just like money and blood.

🔥 for Mae and Devil??

Maevil: I'm never not thinking about Mae somehow meeting pre-golem Devil. time travel? I kind of like time travel. maybe time loop, even. she gets launched into the past for whatever reason and either the loop is centered around the destruction of Cold Morn (she must let it burn) or it's centered around Devil's most notorious string of murders in Caroc. or maybe her capture in Stalwart.

oh oh OH I already have Devil's soul be pulled into the Eothas statue in the Maevil Deadfire "canon" (long story.) so. when Eothas puts her back. maybe Mae needs to do some Watcher stuff to get her soul to settle back in place nicely and the time loop is like, Mae entering a memory by touching Devil's soul. she's projected into the memory as a traveler who happens to visit the village the day of The Incident. she meets the version of Devil that existed then. they get along. it's the bittersweet experience of getting to see what Devil was like back then, and learning that she would have liked her, and having to let her go through hell because that's what happened and there's no changing the past. these people are already gone. and so is this version of the woman she loves.

Maevil AGAIN: it's late and I'm getting wild with it. some animancy experiment or other soul based phenomenon goes horribly wrong. Mae's soul is ripped from her body, but, instead of being returned to the Wheel, is absorbed into the golem that attempted to shield her from the blast. now her and Devil are two disembodied souls sharing the same mechanical body. is Mae trapped there forever, like Devil is? can she leave? could it be that they might be happier this way?

Ahimi/Kana: honestly it's a bit of a one sentence horror story situation but how about. Kana Sings At Ahimi's Wedding.

more Maevil: Devil said that she's always wanted to see more of the world. after Thaos' death, Mae takes her traveling. which goes great, until one of the towns they visit turns out to be the home of someone who'd lost family to Devil's arson, and means to make her pay. they lure the Watcher into an old house, lock the doors, and set the place on fire.
