Mosur pulled on his pipe and looked up at the towering Temple. It didn’t seem as inviting anymore. He exhaled and tapped the pipe upside down on one of the nearby masonry structures and let the ashes scatter. He stuffed the pipe into his slacks, you weren’t supposed to smoke in the Temple, at least outside of Sister Superior’s office. He hadn’t thought he’d be welcome at Mercy’s Temple anymore and had more or less stayed away from it since his release from jail. But here he had received a letter from Father Mal'valen requesting his presence. He hadn’t said why.He was dressed sharp, actually wearing his jacket for a change as he ducked into the dim halls. He wasn’t exactly sure where the Father’s study would be, but paused to look up at the empty organ. “Mosur.” He started at his name and turned to see the masked father standing there, the man hardly made a sound as he moved. “Father Mal’valen, you wanted to see me?” He looked at the intricate mask sharp high cheekbones, empty voided eyes, black tears. That’s not what the maker of the mask wanted seen when someone looked at this though.“I did, my study please?” He asked and motioned to let Mosur walk ahead.Mosur moved after a pause walking as he was lead. “I’m very sorry for your loss Father.”“Here,” the priest said and opened a door, again allowing Mosur to enter first. “And thank you for your sympathies Mosur.” He closed the door behind them and walked over to his desk where he sat and opened the large bottom drawer.Mosur lingered standing and glanced around the study, it was nothing like Zimina’s office, old texts lined the walls, some still in scrolls. It looked like it needed a dusting in here and his desk wasn’t as fancy, but was stacked with far more papers than he had ever seen her and the room was lit with candles rather than electric lights. He looked back to the Father as he sat up again and put a box on his desk, it was wooden with a well lacquered, checkered top.“This was found in Zimina’s room, along with a gift box. I hope you can forgive me for not wrapping it for her. But, there isn’t much question who she bought this for. I think she would like you to have it.”Mosur’s brow furrowed as he stepped up to the priest’s desk and looked down at the chess board. The ends of bullets or bullet casings glinted in the candle lit room. He reached forward and flipped the securing length of metal free and pulled one of the bullet casings free, he huffed to himself, a black rook. He slipped it back into its slot and tucked the metal back in place. “Thank you Father…I don’t know what to say.” His chest felt heavy again but he was determined not to be emotional in front of the Father.Father Mal'valen held up his hand. “Say nothing,” the priest responded quietly. “I’m glad to be able to fulfill Sister Zimina’s wishes.” Lowering his hand once more, he tugged at his glove, resisting the urge to raise his mask so that Mosur could see the true emotions hidden behind it. “You needn’t avoid the Temple,” he added simply.Mosur nodded mechanically, his throat was already growing tight. “Thank you,” he said with a distortion to his voice. “If you’ll excuse me though.” He said and lifted the finely made set. He turned on the front of his hoof and started toward the door.“The Divine bless and protect you,” Mosur heart Father Mal’valen say, It only caused him a slight pause as he pushed against the heavy door and stepped out of the study that had only seemed to grow stuffier the longer he had stared at the undelivered gift.
