About an hour before evening vespers, the Sister Superior rolled into the chapel, seeking Father Mal’valen. She made ithalfway down the aisle before she spotted a dark-robed robed form curled up inone of the pews. With the jar of incense near the prone woman’s hand, Ziminaknew it was Kirahti.
Questions formed in the elder’s mind, including whether the work demands for the younger Sister were too great forher capability. But then, Kirahti had chosen this life and the difficultiesthat accompanied it. This sort of misstep shouldn’t be tolerated. What if oneof their benefactors had arrived and seen her lazing about?
Yet waking her with a harsh rebukeseemed too cruel. There had to be a way to make the point without giving thegirl a violent shock.
The Sister Superior continued up theaisle toward the altar, and the hooded Father came out to greet her. Evidently hewas aware of the napping Sister, but when Zimina spun her finger in the air, heknew what the Superior wanted.
A few minutes later, the bells of thechapel rang out loud and clamorous. Kirahti started awake and popped her headup over the back of the pew.
In the front, the Sister Superior satbefore the altar and leveled a look that generations of Temple-children knewand quailed at long after they’d grown.
The younger hurried to finish refillingthe incense burners for evening vespers.
