Relistened to MAG 57, Personal Space, and had an idea.

Normally to escape from the Lonely you need to pull on a connection with loved ones; but it’s not clear from the statement that Carter Chilcott has any. He doesn’t mention missing anyone in particular, or indicate that any personal concerns on earth were a factor in his decision to take the job. Furthermore, he was personally selected for the Lonely experiment by the Lukases, and you’d expect them to choose an ideal candidate, one with no family ties whatsoever.

In the absence of an anchor, Carter somehow avoided being stuck in the Lonely by intentionally starving himself into unconsciousness, intending to starve himself to death. And I find that very interesting.

I suspect the canonical reason he survived is that when the consortium realized he was about to die, they decided to pull the plug to avoid the bad press that a death on their watch would have caused the Lukases and the Fairchilds. Which, fair enough, that’s reasonable.

But let me propose another idea: Carter Chilcott escaped the Lonely by accidentally pledging himself to the End.

Yearning for death, intentionally causing yourself the days-long constant agony of hunger and thirst despite the food and drink that would relieve it being right there? That relief at the idea of your own coming End - having the your own death be the greatest relief, the most welcomed event of your entire life? That’s some Terminus shit.
