Pickpocketed?
I am in need of a huge siesta right now but I'm forcing myself to stay awake so I can continue being productive so I have less to stress out about this week. After a month and a half of pretty much not doing any work, it feels weird to be studying and writing essays but I'm weirdly enjoying this productivity for some reason...
Camille took a spontaneous trip to Madrid this weekend so I spent most of this weekend as a tour guide showing my favorite Barcelonian (???) around. The weather this weekend (and really for the rest of this week) was BEAUTIFUL and so Camille and I decided to go row boating at Retiro. I channeled my inner Noah Calhoun (as did Camille) and we floated around for about an hour. We then went to Lise & Leti's homemade cookies cause it was in the list of places I had to go to while I was here. I got their cookie of the month - white chocolate & fig cookie - and it did not disappoint. I'm still on the search for a place that sells pumpkin-flavored cookies/cupcakes because I miss the baked and wired pumpkin cupcake so much you have no idea.. After that, we walked over to Templo de Debod. I was a month late in visiting Templo de Debod but yeah, it was definitely cool too see a temple in the middle of Madrid. Definitely need to come back when the sun is setting though. I showed Camille around Campo de Cebada before going for tacos at Taqueria de Birra and she was super sketched out by the people there. I'm a huuuuge fan of Campo de Cebada and the whole grungy-looking crowd there but she wasn't feeling it hahaha. I told her that I would come back on my own again, dressed to fit in and just chat it up with the angsty people there. Taqueria de Birra was deeeeelish. I got their veggie tacos (it's weird but I find myself choosing all the vegetarian options because I'm so used to eating that way at my homestay) and it was so so good. Definitely better than Taqueria al Almillo. It was an early night because Camille had been on the bus all morning and we walked around everrrrywhere.
Saturday morning, I went with the poli sci class to visit the Congreso de Diputados. It was only a 30-minute (not even) tour of the tiny ass building and it was beautiful inside but the tour itself was very anticlimactic. After that, Camille, Mak & I went to Magasand to get work done but they for some reason didn't allow laptops between 1-4pm... It was kind of a waste of time to go there but I did get this really yummy hummus 'nosandwich' (it was basically hummus spread on matzo bread sprinkled with arugula and tomatoes) which was nice. La Fugitiva was on my list of cafés to go to so we went there instead to do our work. It was a tiny bookstore with small tables to work on but I really liked the cozy feel of it. I for some reason love the feeling of being surrounded by books... You're a weirdo Ahrim.
I was still pretty exhausted from Friday so after resting for an hour, Camille and I headed back out to grab dinner. I yelped a tapas place off the Noviciado metro called Casa Federica because I read that they had really good pumpkin empanadas. Since I had been craving pumpkin-flavored SOMETHING, I had to go... So we went. I wouldn't say the empanadas were out of this world (there wasn't enough pumpkin filling....letdown) but the doughy part of the empanada was pretty good - perfectly warm, light, and flaky.
To satisfy our sweet tooth, we went to Malasaña to this 'hand-crafted' ice cream place called Mistura. It's a tinier but more hip version of Coldstone - cause they take your ice cream and mash it and shit with the toppings on top of a counter - and the guy who scooped my ice cream was SUPER CUTE. I got pistachio ice cream and he recommended that I top it with a drizzle of honey (you get a free topping with your scoop) and it. was. SO. GOOD. It's in a really compact space but I think it'd be a perfect place to go study (they also sell smoothies there and they all sounded deeeelish). The staff is all made up of guys and they all seemed super chill so I definitely going back there to hang out with them. Earlier today I found their website and was reading up on the guys who own the place and they just seem like super knowledgeable and down to earth guys... New best friends? :)
Sooooo acknowledging the title of my post...
While walking down a street headed towards Sol, I felt someone tug my purse... Makena usually likes to fuck with me and pretend like someone's trying to steal my stuff so I just assumed it was her and ignored it. But the tugging lasted for a longer time than usual so I reached back and felt for my purse to realize that 1) it was unzipped and 2) my wallet was gone. My first instinct was to just grab the first person I saw brushing past me and it ended up being this short, grimy-looking bearded guy. So I grabbed him really firmly and started freaking out at him to give me my wallet back. He responded back and told me to get my hands off of him and I was on the verge of hitting him until some old woman came up to me and handed me my wallet back.
"Es que tengo hambre..." she said.
Hunger is not a fun thing and homelessness isn't either, but that still doesn't justify stealing from people.
I. Was. Furious.
I snatched my wallet back from her and started flipping out at the woman because I was just high on adrenaline - half terrified/panicked, half pissed off. I guess the fact that the woman returned my wallet back restored my faith in humanity a little bit but I don't know, people suck.
What's interesting is that earlier in the day yesterday, my mom had texted me and warned me to not go out because she had a bad dream about me. I told her I would be fine and she insisted that I just don't go out but I did anyway. I guess her intuition was right... I'm just glad the big man upstairs didn't allow for that woman to get away with my stuff.
I feel like this blog post is all over the place but I'm sleepy and need to continue studying. Bleh.
I see Glass Animals this Thursday which I'm SO stoked about then head to Galicia for the weekend. WOOOOOO TRAVELLING!

Dicen que tienen los mejores sandwiches de Madrid y no lo dicen ellos sino los que han pasado por ahí y los han probado. Sorprendentes, diferentes y ricos, muy ricos.
