Maggie sighed as she stared forlornly at the fridge. It had been about a month since she had been there, and about a week since April started going out with Casey. She knew that it was bound to happen, but Donnie had taken it so hard…
She knew that this was great because Donnie had more time to spend with her, but first she had to mend her turtledove’s broken heart. Hopefully, this should work.
“Hey Donnie!” Maggie called into the lair from the kitchen. Some of the din in the background stopped.
“Yeah?” Came his faint reply.
“You got a minute? I wanna show you something.” She said, pulling a couple of plates onto the island in the kitchen. A small clatter was heard behind her as tools were laid to rest, and the soft sound of turtle feet padding their way in her direction. He plopped down in a chair behind her, smelling slightly of sweat and electronics. The best smell in the world in her opinion.
“You’ve been a little down lately, so I made us something sweet!” She said as she pulled the tray of her orange wiggly concoction out of the fridge. She served some onto plate and held it in front of his face, “Behold!” She cried as she jiggled it a little. “Orange jello!”
“Whoa!” Donnie said softly, his brown eyes filled with awe. “What is it?”
“Orange.” Maggie replied setting it in front of him.
“Yeah, well I can see that.” Donnie made a face. “I mean, what flavor is it?”
“Orange! It’s orange jello!” Maggie giggled.
“Orange is a color, AND a flavor?”
“You guys really need to start eating something other than pizza.” Maggie smiled and shook her head.
Donnie poked at the mass on his plate quizzically. “So, uh…how do you eat this thing anyways?”
“That’s the best part!” She smiled as she handed him a spoon. “You see, jello is the best food to eat when you have a gap in your teeth. Here, watch!” She took a spoonful of the jello and brought it up to her own gap, and watched his face light up as it disappeared into her mouth.
“WHOA! That was so cool! I gotta try that!”
They spent the rest of the evening together, playing with jello and enjoying each other’s company with nothing but smiles all around, broken hearts mended, and a new love in the air. Also, the faint scent of electronics and oranges.
