Would flying with mage wings be a big physical activity? I always thought that when the arms were turned into wings, the mage gets additional arm strength that helps them fly.
Oooh it’s definitely a physical activity, all right. And a big one at that.
I’ve heard people say before that since “manus pluma volantus” transforms arms into wings, it should also make those wings strong enough to carry the mage over great distances and long periods of time.
That would make sense...except that arms are not the primary muscles that winged creatures use to fly. Wings don’t carry that much muscle to begin with. Instead, birds and other flying animals rely on muscles from their chest to generate thrust, while their back and shoulder muscles help flap their wings to stay in the air.
And if you look at the transformations for both Callum and Ibis:
You can see that, while their arms are transformed into wings, these areas (shoulders, back, and chest) all stay normal. A mage would have to exert themselves in these areas to fly, and even more so over long flights. I’d also wager that a mage’s core would also be engaged, since they’ll have to stabilize themselves during their flight.
So, when it just so happens that Ibis has a pretty athletic build in these areas in particular, that provides quite a bit of support for this idea. It wouldn’t take that much physical exertion for Callum to dive down after Rayla, and then fly back up to the pinnacle. But if he wants to fly for long stretches of time? He’s going to have to put his back into it (and then some). And I personally think he’s more than up for the task.
