do all of them for the writers ask
mei pls
puitting this under a read more bc it’s gonna get long
1) is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?
Yep! I actually just started planning it but i would have to do a lot, lot, lot of research for it and it’s psychological/thriller/mystery, which is a genre I have no experience writing in.
2) what work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?
My supernatural fanfiction that I wrote in 2011. please erase it from existence.
3) what order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?
I write scenes I know i definitely want in the book, then try and write in chronological order, working those scenes in when i can.
4) favorite character you’ve written
This is so hard!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really do enjoy writing Raven, one of the protags of my current book, because he thinks in a way I just love writing.
5) character you were most surprised to end up writing
A vampire! I’ve never been one for writing vampires (I usually choose werewolves) but it’s been really fun being able to twist the lore and kinda makeup my own rules.
6) something you would go back and change in your writing that it’s too late/complicated to change now
My style lmao. I’m not a big fan of it.
7) when asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?
Embarrassed if it’s with people I don’t know or my family, since constant anxiety makes me think it’s stupid and dumb, but I love talking to author friends! It’s nice to be surrounded by people who understand what you do and don’t say “it’s a waste of a degree.”
8) favorite genre to write
I’m a sucker for romance but I love paranormal/supernatural creatures! A little horror here and there, too.
9) what, if anything, do you do for inspiration?
Read, read, read! Reading books always makes me remember that this dream is a real one, and it can happen. Writing inspiration definitely comes from reading as well.
10) write in silence or with background noise? with people or alone?
Alone usually since i’m very self-conscious. I have to have background noise or music when I’m writing, though!
11) what aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?
Definitely descriptions. I still struggle with it, but my flow and how i describe something has improved so much since I first started.
12) your weaknesses as an author
I have a hard time reading over things, and I’m terrible at writing longer chapters/stories.
13) your strengths as an author
I’d like to say my language and wording is really good and my flow is A-OK!
14) do you make playlists for your current wips?
I try to make the general theme the same, but I don’t really have any certain method.
15) why did you start writing?
When I was really little I used to get these nightmares. They were awful, really awful. When I wrote them down, in my limited vocabulary and spelling, it felt like I was getting rid of them, like trapping them in my little binder would keep them out of my dreams. The more I thought that the less I had nightmares, and ever since then I’ve been writing.
16) are there any characters who haunt you?
Did you mean: all of them
17) if you could give your fledgling author self any advice, what would it be?
Keep!!!! Writing!!!!! Never let anyone tell you it’s stupid or dumb!! You love what you love and it’s ok!!!
18) were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? what were they?
Oh most definitely. Ned Vizzini’s It’s Kind of a Funny Story impacted me so heavily that I reread it almost as I finished it. His writing is so real and awkward and so Craig that it really affected me. Melinda Lo’s Ash as well as any book by Laurie Halse Anderson had me the same way.
19) when it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?
i make little notes to myself as i write. X got a black eye, I need to remember that, Y has grown from 14 to 17 within this part, because no one’s perfect. I don’t remember every little detail.
20) do you write in long sit-down sessions or in little spurts?
Both! Sometimes I can bang out 8 hours of full on writing and other times I can only focus for 30 minutes.
21) what do you think when you read over your older work?
Terrible. Awful. Dreadful. This needs to be longer. You need to explain this more. Give this piece more detail. I also really look and see how much I’ve improved from my old works, and it’s fun to see that.
22) are there any subjects that make you uncomfortable to write?
Usually not! I’ve had a lot of things happen to me in life that make it easier to write, but there are definitely some things I feel uncomfortable writing about.
23) any obscure life experiences that you feel have helped your writing?
I’ve broken ribs, my leg, my collarbone, my dad is an immigrant, we grew up with little money, I have 4 siblings, we once owned 8 animals at the same time, a family of 7 lived in a home with only 3 real bedrooms. Suffice to say, I’ve had quite a few.
24) have you ever become an expert on something you previously knew nothing about, in order to better a scene or a story?
I wouldn’t say an expert, but I definitely know more about a lot of professions because of what I’ve had to research!
25) copy/paste a few sentences or a short paragraph that you’re particularly proud of
“Thanks,” he mutters, making his way up the stairs to the bathroom. He doesn’t think about how this will be the last time in awhile he makes this trip. He doesn’t think about the fact that Wolf gets to stay here and revel in this acceptance. He gets to walk up these ratty, worn, creaky stairs every goddamned day while Raven makes his climb up the glacier of his home with an ice pick in hand.
