Series thoughts: A Million Little Things - Season 5
I've been watching the show from the start and it's been an emotional ride. The show did so many things right in the beginning. The storyline of grief and how a wife, children and best friends cope with a loved one that kills themselves after suffering with depression (no one knew) - it made me tear up on several occasions.
Other storylines involving Rome who was also battling depression and was on medication, and due to his friend's death, he found the strength to keep trying, opening up to his wife and friends. He ended up making a movie/documentary for it, it was a beautiful story.
There was a plot about Sophie and her music teacher, where he never touched her, but he took photos and manipulated her into stepping over a line. It affected her and she had trouble dealing with it but had a support structure around her and she worked through it. I appreciated how they took it slow as she processed the events and how she felts about it. It also drew out a story from Gina, who was abused my her uncle. Both of these stories were handled with care.
A coming out story of Danny, cancer survival, remission - the side effects and how a person processes their journey and how to move on.
Eddie having the car accident and being in the wheelchair, but staying in the wheelchair and dealing with the huge change in his life.
Finding love and new understanding or relationship with your parent for Katherine. She allowed herself time to self reflect and look back on how she felt for people through her life and came to recognize she still had strong feelings for a woman from high school. She pursued it and they fell in life and created a life together. (There was a plot line involving Theo dealing with change which was good.)
There were a lot of good stories, a few more not mentioned.
And then there was the stuff I'm going to side eye. I strongly disliked when Delilah went to France (I know it was because the actress didn't want to be away from her family so much during the Covid protocols) however I feel the show needed to do something different. Especially during that time where Danny was struggling with boys and Sophie with the teacher abuse. It did not make sense that a mom wouldn't return.
When Gary was complicit in the assault on the music teacher. I wanted to see the music teacher get what they deserved but to take it that far -- it crossed the line. Eddie keeping a romantic relationship with the music teacher's estranged wife (who ends up allowing her husband to die).
Eddie "never having gotten over" Delilah and they got back together (the woman he cheated on Katherine with (and had a baby!)). There was no foreshadowing there, it was as though Eddie was going to pursue a romantic relationship with Nicole (the woman that caused his accident) but then immediately changed course to Delilah.
Maybe this was because they got word it was the finale season? So they needed to tie it all into a bow? The reason doesn't matter because as a viewer, I just didn't buy it. I feel like it made it cheaper.
The way Maggie acted during the end of her pregnancy, being so paranoid about her job status. Treating the other doctor like such crap, jumping to conclusions, it was just terrible behavior and seemed very out of character.
But the biggest ... grrr for me was Gary and cancer. I think if I take a step back and look at the whole thing, the way the show opens with the suicide of Jon, who suffered so silently with his depression. To the way the show ends, with the death of Gary, supported and loved to the very end, by his friends and chosen family. The way each character learned from Jon's death and how it actually kept the friends together, expanding their family.
I just... after watching five seasons of the characters growing, loving, changing, finding themselves. All the while dealing with real life stuff, keeping it real. I'm still disappointed that it ended with his death, keeping with the real tone they thread throughout. So I suppose it was well done, I think I just would have preferred that it just end the characters live in without the montage of 15 years later.
I did love the narration of Gary at the end, about finding your ride or die friends, making them their family.
