Out Under The Stars
Outside the Vesuvian city limits the plains offered a vast escape from the fast paced world within. Tall grass muffled most sounds and hid many lurking things. Tonight, out under the stars the plains hid two magicians from the rest of the world.
The blanket beneath them was soft and the basket that had held their dinner was now empty. The tall grass swayed in the gentle breeze all around them but their eyes stayed on the stars above.
One of the magicians laid on her back with long red curls splayed out over their blanket and the other curled close at her side to lay her head on the formers chest. Elegant pale fingers brushed lightly through dark blonde hair and a gentle humming could be heard.
The stillness of the night contrasted heavily with the havoc that had been their last few weeks. Cleo, who continued to hum, had lured Maggie out to the fields for a break in the chaos. Though the blonde magician would never admit things were weighing on her, Cleo always knew.
They’d snuck away to this secret spot, laughed, talked, and ate the evening away. The comfortable silence though, when they could just pause and feel the other’s warmth, that made it perfect.
“How do you always know?” Maggie’s voice was small as she finally decided to ask.
“Hm,” Cleo stopped her humming. “I just can with you.”
“Without using your magic?”
“Yes. It’s not about the energy around you or your aura, I just know.”
Maggie held onto her partner a little tighter.
“I always thought I could put on a smile and push through. It’s worked before. Though when you invited me... I realized you knew...”
Cleo dropped a small kiss on Maggie’s hairline but didn’t press, letting the fire mage take her time.
“I’ve never felt weak... until I met you...” her voice started to choke up slightly.
“Darling,” Cleo murmured softly. “You’re not weak. You’re just human which means sometimes it’s alright to not be strong. To ask for help is how we survive.”
Maggie gave a slight nod then a few deep breaths before lifting her head up to face Cleo.
“I... I’m... I’m not afraid to... be weak around you.”
Cleo gave her a small smile and cupped her cheek.
“You can be anything around me, darling. I’ll always love you.”
Maggie’s heart seemed to hammer in her chest and her cheeks felt hot. At the moment she felt completely loved and safe.
Moving quickly, Maggie brought her lips to Cleo’s for a hard kiss full of longing. Once they broke apart Maggie gently whispered:
“Thank you.”
Above them, if they’d cared to see anything apart from each other, a shooting star flew across the sky.
