Maghera Beach

On a previous visit to Maghera village, I found out that there is a large beach here. What's more, there seem to be caves here but I was there at a bad time since the tide has already come in so most of the caves weren't accessible. I decided to come back here and hopefully I remember to come when the tide is low. There is a parking area on the way to the beach but you need to pay for it. Some people would end up parking further out to avoid paying for it. I still made use of the parking area anyway but the caretaker wasn't there yet. There is a path from the parking to the beach and some parts can be a bit rough so make sure you have the proper footwear for this.

Tiny plant #3: speedwell, (Veronica persica), a tiny blue flower of early spring. Persica means it's from Persia, and in persian it's called "سیزاب ایرانی", with the ایرانی part <Irani> also meaning the same thing. The genus name Veronica is from a Greek name meaning bringer of victory. . Veronica was also my mother's mother's name. Her family was from Co. Derry in Ireland, and were travelling healers. Walking on the Beach at Maghera

The beach at Maghera is actually a huge deposit of sand formed from the nearby estuary. This is a common feature of the land in this part of Donegal and it is not a surprise to see several of them here. This, however, seems to be the most impressive of them by far. It is best to visit this place when the tide is low because it would take time to go all the way to the edge. I arrived shortly after the lowest point of the tide so I knew that time was not on my side. While I was taking my time walking the beach, the tide was slowly creeping in. What was almost dry sand was now slowly looking more and more wet. The swampier areas were starting to fill up with water as you can also see the channel on the left is starting to become deeper.

Going to Granny

I was taking advantage of the loosening of restrictions to visit western Donegal. I spotted a few places in Google Maps which hopefully would be a nice spot. It already started off very nice with the Assaranca Waterfall which is just right beside the road. On my way to Maghera Beach, I noticed that the landscape just opened up with a presence of an amphitheater like formation in the mountains. I reminded me a lot of the scenic route to Slieve League, Glengesh Pass, which is not that far away from here. This seems to be a less known version of Glengesh. Apparently, the place is named Granny which can be difficult to look for in Google.

Assaranca Waterfalls

In this time of travel restrictions I take every chance I get to go around. This time around, there are restrictions on traveling outside the county. This means that I will be stuck in Donegal. Fortunately, that is not such a bad thing. Donegal has a lot of wild and pristine areas which are just waiting for visitors. This time of lockdown, there are even less people how make it all the way here. However, this means that we would have the place all to ourselves. This time, I would be visiting Western Donegal, which is the Atlantic coast. I have heard about how nice this area could be so I needed to find out.
