Going to an MtG convention pros and cons:
Cons: the ratio of non men to men is like 10%/90%.
Pros: this means that the women’s bathrooms are always available and extremely clean, while the men’s bathrooms are a fucking hellscape
Don’t forget to check your deck list my dudes...
The State of MtG and its Playerbase
I know a lot of you don’t really care about cEDH, but just listen to this non-cEDH topic that someone brought up in a podcast about it regarding Magic Fest Richmond. Its a sad thing to hear about the game. And no, this is not anything political or anything like that, its just observations about how the game has turned and how many players are leaving.
It starts around 4:50 and the main points he was taling about ended at about 7:15, so give it an idle listen if you want to know a little more about what MF Richmond looked like.

If you don’t want to listen, it can be summed up like this: He saw basically a small exodus of Magic players who were done and selling out their collections. Not just players unhappy with Standard or so, but former players unloading full foil cubes and collections of dual lands and other things. Players who have been a part of this game for a very long time were leaving. He also mentioned that the Main event was tiny compared to what they used to be. He estimated it was around 350 players when he remembers only a few years ago it was more like 4.5 thousand. Does this mean MtG is ending and its time to panic? No, certainly not. What it means is that players especially at competitive events who attend GPs (now MFs) and veterans have not been happy about the game, and players are leaving. It means that WotC has let down a lot of people. I know from the vocal people here on Tumblr that they have been let down or even feel outright betrayed by such things as the cash grabs of Mythic Editions or now Secret Lairs, or the representation of groups in the media content like War of the Spark Forsaken. So, well, people are not happy right now. If you listen even longer he makes quips about how vendors were out of Noxious Grasps and put up signs saying they refuse to buy Oko (which btw is a pretty serious thing as this was before the ban and if you wanted to play Standard you needed Oko and you couldn’t unload them after making Oko a toxic asset). that looks like a fun standard, doesn’t it?
MtG could definately be doing better is what you should take away from this as a whole. MtG is growing, its not declining, but I think thats only because new players massively outweigh the long invested players who were once the backbone of the game. I don’t think WotC is really respecting older players as much as they are, well, replaceable. It feels like if you aren’t buying Commander Precons, or getting into Standard or Pioneer there just isn’t a lot of support anymore. The gimmicks like shiney specialty artificial scarcity products aren’t directed towards older audiences either. They are “aspiring collector” bait, that’s how I think of them anyway.
Well, thats all I really wanted to share. Just feeling a bit off after so much has happened so recently.
Travel Buddy: MagicFest Richmond Sunday 12:15 Mystery Booster Sealed Double-Up
Just floating this and on short term notice it probably couldn’t happen but...
Anybody want to join me for a drive to Richmond specifically to play the Mystery Booster event on Sunday at noon?
I have the car and will provide gas (though if you want to help out with the gas it would be appreciated)
You need to be in/near Columbus, OH (or willing to meet me, or along the way down 33 and 77 to Richmond)
You need to be able and willing to drive part of the trip
You should also be 18 or older
We would leave from Columbus, OH by 3 AM Sunday morning, do the event, and immediately begin the drive home after the event
It would be a packed and pretty much nonstop 24 hours, but I’ve made this trip solo before to play at the inaugural Brawl World Championship so it’s totally possible. I just told myself I’d never do it solo again. Also know I’d probably be on board for playing the entire event no matter how bad my record was, though we could feel it out at that point based on how much energy/time we have to make the return trip. I have to work that Monday morning.
Magic Fest||CLOSED
@my-lost-soul-in-the-dark Bree was walking the streets of the town, looking around at all that was going on at the festival. She'd never been to one of these because he father didn't really like the idea of there possibly being hunters nearby these types of events. She looked up at the sky and smiled softly. Today was going to be a fairly decent day for her to be outside. Before she knew it, she was sitting flat on her ass on the ground and looking up at a handsome gentleman. "I'm so sorry, sir. I didn't see you there."
This year
I think I am going to try and travel a bit more for Magic. Im in GA, so i can easily drive to FL, KY, SC, or NC for any Magic Fests. This is the year that I'll not punt, and make D2. So if any of you wanna meet up or share a hotel for cost saving benefits, I'm your man
