Let's talk : The effect of Christianity
I'd like to preface this post by saying that I am in no way involved with Christianity or Catholicism as part of my practice. In the past, I have been a part of the Roman Catholic church, but I no longer follow that path. That being said, I have nothing against Christianity, Catholicism, God or Christians. Every practice is valid, and no hate will be tolerated in my blog.
Religious trauma, particularly from monotheistic religions and especially from Christianity, has affected the pagan community strongly.
Before we get into the point of this post, let me say something:
As someone who grew up learning that Christianity was the only valid religion, I am well aware of how, let's say toxic so-called 'Christians' can be, especially to people who don't conform with their beliefs.
However, I also grew up with a loving mother who taught me that God loved me unconditionally. And I don't, in any way, doubt the validity of that. Not anymore.
Growing up surrounded by Catholics and going to Christian schools taught me that not every Christian is bad. I still have Christian friends who are the sweetest people I've ever met. I still have Catholic teachers who are the kindest people I know.
And I still know 'Christians' who hate LGBTQ+. And I still know 'Christians' who hate on pagans. Please don't lump these people together with Christians and Catholics. They don't truly understand the point of the word of God, the point of His love, the point of Catholicism. They're not Christians. Not really.
Now, onto the actual content of this post:
How has 'Christianity' affected pagans today? I'm an ex-Christian, and I still deal with the lingering effects of being in an orthodox religion like Roman Catholicism.
I'm trying to acknowledge these effects and work through them so I can practice to my fullest potential and not be held back by Christian beliefs.
I'm sure other people reading this also deal with Christian beliefs when they try to practice and let me tell you:
Most of those beliefs don't apply to Hellenic Polytheism or witchcraft.
No, you do not need to be formal and rigid with your Gods.
No, you do not need to pray daily and offer every few minutes.
No, you do not need to have an altar or prayer beads.
No, you are not inherently sinful.
No, you do not need to abstain of pleasure.
Wipe the slate clean--every law you thought was set in stone is washed away, You, by yourself, are enough.
You do not need to become a priest.
You do not need to constantly be truthful.
You do not need to live in fear of your Deities, especially.
Whatever you were taught in Christianity does not apply here. We are not a religion based on teachings from religious figures. No one is going to tell you that you're wrong. And if they do, ignore them. Block them. Forget about them. You're doing everything right. You're doing fine. You're doing great. The Gods love you. Do not think otherwise.
