One of my favourite moments in The Adventure Zone happens in The Suffering Game arc when Magnus spins for Mind. Instead of taking his most obvious and painful memory, the litches decide to take the opposite. Instead of taking his love and his relationship with Jules they take his hate and his quest for vengence against Governor Kalen . Before that episode I hadn’t ever really thought about how important hate can be. We usually think of ourselves as a composite of all the good things that we appreciate in this world, the people we love, the foods we like, and all of things close to the core of our personality. But when Magnus was faced with the option of losing all memory of Governor Kalen I realized that standing against something, that the things we fear or loathe or revile, express the limits of our identity. I realized that sometimes the “bad feelings” can be really important to us.
