What do you think makes a good story?
I am finding it hard not to write an essay XDD
TL;DR Pandora Hearts. It has it's flaws yes, but it has the two things I enjoy most in any story.
The first is that the characters; they are engaging, realistic, and outright wonderful. As a result, it is easy to connect with them and feel for them, and they become more than just words/pictures on a page. Plot can carry a series so far, but personally if the characters are not interesting I eventually disconnect.
The second thing I love is when a story allows the reader to see what's coming without being obvious. Basically, my favourite stories are the ones where, when you reach a plot twist or a dramatic reveal, you actually was to slap yourself for not seeing it coming, because the author provided just enough information for you to have guessed if you were paying attention (see Darren Shan for reference). Anyone can throw in a twist for the sake of adding a twist, like suddenly killing off a character with no prior warning, and yes, those can be great and exciting. However, there is just something so much more engaging and entertaining and outright fun about a story that gives you enough information to figure everything out and still manages to catch you. Even if you do guess the outcome there is just a great sense of satisfaction that you managed to guess what was going to happen (accompanied with emotional agony because YES THE THEORY WAS RIGHT but its a horrible theory about my favourite character and now everything is horrible for him noooooo). I guess I feel more involved with stories like that?
So... basically have characters I can love, and a plot that keeps me guessing and makes me want to try and figure out what will happen next~ :D
