The demo covers the prologue which introduces you to the world. You will meet one of your companions and... get into trouble. You will also create your character and choose their background that will be explored in the next chapter.
So I've been hinting at my super-secret writing project for months now and, as I'm crawling towards the release of the demo of the prologue, I think it's time to introduce you to:
Mahogard. The city of mages. The capital of Hanfald. And your current place in the world.
Mahogard is an interactive fiction game set in a fantasy world, in the country ruled by mages. With conflict between mages and non-mages growing out of control, you get mixed up in power struggles between political factions.
At some point there might be dragons.
If you wish to learn more about this project, take a look at my project's blog: @mahogard-if
It's been A LOT of work. With all the routes, variations and variables, I wrote about 66K words so far - and that's not including code. I needed to figure out Twine & JavaScript - and even CSS gets tricky if you want to accomodate for different options.
Right now everything is coded; I think I got rid of the worst bugs but I still have feedback from my trusted beta readers to go through.
And this is the place to thank said beta readers:
@kawaterrier who introduced me to IF; saw the whole process from the very beginning; helped me brainstorm whenever I got stuck in any part of the story of worldbuilding; basically gave me a ready-to-use UI template that I only needed to tweak a little; and was the first to test it when it actually got coded.
@reverienne who played the game multiple times already; reads everything thoroughly and tracks down any inconsistencies and grammar mistakes she could find and remains my English expert.

Demo stats:
Words (with code): 80k
Words (without code): 66k
Single playthrough: 16k
When Hanfald fell prey to dragons and other legendary creatures that started appearing out of nowhere 200 years ago, it was the mages who saved the country and managed to fight off the beasts.
It made sense back then to shower them with privileges as a thank-you for their heroism and as a thank-you-in-advance if the Pandemonium were to happen again.
Well, during those 200 years, the Pandemonium never happened again, while the privileges remained very real. And increasingly burdensome for non-mages.
As the day of the royal election is drawing nearer, you are thrown into the middle of political games of factions vying for influence.
Well, at least now no magical beasts are trying to destroy the country...
...right?
Create your Main Character:
Choose one of 3 available ancestries (humans and two fantasy ancestries: delga and kadari).
Choose MC's gender and appearance.
Choose whether your MC has magical powers or not.
Choose one of 3 available classes and 9 specialisations.
Experience one of 6 playable backstories depending on other choices.
Through your decisions, shape your MC's stats and traits that will influence your gameplay.
Engage with the story:
Influence the country's future by cooperating with one of political factions... or not.
Create the best future career for your MC... or become a failure no one has seen before.
Save the country from dangerous beasts (in both literal and figurative sense)...or let it be destroyed.
Make friends or enemies that might help you with all the above... or try to achieve it by yourself.
Make the disparities between mages and non-mages shrink... or become greater than ever.
The story is intended for 16+ audience.
Trigger warnings include: violence, depictions of blood and gore, death, animal injury and death.
Trigger warnings list will be updated as the game goes on.
The game is in early development and every part released is possibly subject to change. If you happen to come across any error or mistakes, please let me know.
Mahogard is a project I write in my free time - which is scarce. I have a job and other obligations that make the development of the game progress slowly. If you expect frequent updates, I advise you to check the game in the future when more content will be available.
Mahogard is a game with no romance routes. If that's a dealbreaker for you, our ways should part here.

So now that the game is released, it's time to make some plans!
What's done
In case you missed it - the game has been released on 21st May and has since reached 180 browser plays! I'm super thankful for everyone who decided to check it out!
You can find the game HERE (or in the pinned post if you want to play later).
What's Next
Chapter 1 - which is... character backgrounds!
As you may remember, there are 6 character backgrounds. They will be fully playable and will present you with a hopefully interesting self-contained plot each.
For reference - you can find the background descriptions here.
As my time is limited, it will take me some time to get it done. As much as I would love everyone to have at least part of their background as soon as possible, I cannot imagine working on six separate stories at the same time and remember all the variations.
Which is why I decided to introduce a Quick Start option until all backgrounds are completed. Which means you will be able to try out other backgrounds without having to replay the prologue. It will be available with the update that will introduce the part of the first background.
Of course, if you plan to continue the playthrough later, I strongly suggest starting with the prologue because I cannot guarantee the code in later chapters will work.
Right now I'm 20k words into the first background - which is the story of MC coming from a mage human family Legarod. 🎉 I'm nearing the completion of part 1 of 3 but it still needs to go under my beta readers' watchful eyes to make sure everything is working well.
I plan to release backgrounds in parts so the next update will be once I'm sure it's okay so that I won't have to change it too much later to avoid confusion.
In the meantime (aka while my draft is at the mercy of my beta readers), I will be working on the next background, which shows the backstory of MC coming from the kadari ord family Rakdaz.
Once the Legarod background is completed, the Rakdaz background will become a priority and I'll take one of the delga backstories as the one to work on in the meantime.
Did I mention you will get to meet one of your future companions in your backstory? 👀 This story takes place 6 years before the main plot so most of them will still have time to go through more trauma character development before the main story. But you may learn a secret or two other MCs will only discover later. 🫢
I got to the point where I don't think I could make the game any more ready. My beta readers and I hunted down as many bugs and mistakes as we could.
So it's my pleasure to announce that...
The demo of "Mahogard" will be released on 21st May.
The demo covers the prologue, including the character's creator. The demo is about 66k words without code (80k with code), although an average playthrough is much shorter.
Whenever I start writing a character, they gain independence. They make choices I wouldn't suspect them of or reveal information that never appeared in my notes before.
That's why I decided to make this list a little... mysterious. I already know these characters but until I actually meet them in writing, some details may change about them that may need tweaking their description. That's why I'll tell you a little more about each of them once they start appearing in the game.
You will meet Timo in the prologue.
Six others will be introduced in chapter 1 - you will meet one of them depending on your MC's backstory.
Thiemo Lievin (Timo)
he/him
Ancestry: delga / human
Class: mage
You look at the half-delga mage with short brown hair. His round, smiling boyish face could mislead you into thinking that he's a student at most. But you know well enough that underestimating Thiemo Lievin could be a mistake.
Having graduated from Force Mage Faculty, Timo remained friends with many renowned mages (including the Dean of the faculty) but has also gained approval among ordis citizens of the city.
Force magic is about creating movement when there's none and creating support when there's none.
The Alchemist
he/him
Ancestry: human
Class: mage
If you change the structure of the material to the point it becomes something else — does it remember what it used to be?
The Healer
she/her
Ancestry: delga
Class: mage
Does the healer need to heal themself first in order to help others? Or do they need to help others first to be able to help themself?
The Ignitor
xe/xer
Ancestry: kadari
Class: mage
Fire is elusive; you can't define its form because it refuses to stay the same and therefore escapes being described.
The Champion
she/her
Ancestry: kadari / human
Class: guard
When you're holding a shield in a fight, do you think of people in front of you or people behind you?
The Slayer
she/her
Ancestry: human
Class: guard
If you reach the wall and it seems there's no way to move forward — you can still break through the wall.
The Negator
he/him
Ancestry: kadari
Class: guard
If you could erase one thing from the world, what would it be? And what does it tell about yourself?
The Archer
he/him
Ancestry: delga
Class: arkuin
You have to control your body if you want an arrow to hit the target; but once it already flies, the arrow is out of your control.
The Saboteur
she/her
Ancestry: kadari / delga
Class: arkuin
There's a story behind every smile but it's not always a story you would expect.
The Shadow Ranger
he/him
Ancestry: human
Class: arkuin
Shadows are not a threat; shadows are your safe place because they are thought to be a threat.
I was made aware that asks on this page were turned off 🤦♀️ I must have accidentally messed up the page settings. Now the button is back on the page!
So if you had any doubts about it - if you have any questions about the game, I'll be more than happy to answer them! Also if there's anything you would like to share about the game or your MC, I'd love to hear it ❤️
Also, even if I'm not posting here, please be assured that I'm still working on the first backstory!
