#592 Is TIGER finally ready to come out the WOODS??; Legend shows signs of coming back to his best form; 8 of top 13 spots taken by Americans as Spieth-Kisner-Schauffele combo share lead after round 3 in The Open Championship Golf; Shubhankar Sharma became youngest Indian to make cut at a golf major; Maharaja rewrites record books but it is Dananjaya who muscles Lanka to dominant position again and more...:-)
Though Spieth, Kisner and Mcilroy made all the moves on 2nd round, Indian Shubhankar Sharma also left a mark. He was struggling at 5 over at one stage but bounced back to end at 2 over par. He thereby became youngest Indian to make the cut at a golf major. He would be one player who would be tracked in golfing circle in future. In 3rd round, first player who made the mark was the man, the legend himself, TIGER WOODS. He carded a brilliant 5 under. He hit 6 birdies and 1 bogey in his best round in majors in last 7 years. Last time when he hit a 5 under in a major round was in 2011. He even briefly took share of lead at 6 under but dropped the shot 1 hole later. At the end of round 4, he was 4 shots behind lead. In British open, that is achievable as lead can vanish with so many tough holes and bunkers around. Defending champion Jordan Spieth took control with a classy 6 under round of 65. He shared lead of 9 under with Kisner and Schauffele . Kisner has been leader at the end each round so far. But things could change dramatically on final day. Kevin Chappell was at 7 under , 2 shots behind leaders. Molinari ended day at 6 under after he scored 65 in 3rd round. Rory Mcilroy and Fleetwood were among 7 players who were at 5 under. 13 players take top 6 spots and of that, 8 players were Americans. All in top 4 players were Americans. Will another Amercican win major for 5th time in a row? Will Tiger come out of Woods finally? Can Mcilroy win his first major since 2014? Can Fleetwood break the American stronghold on majors and give Europe some momentum going into Ryder Cup? 22-Jul will have answers for all these mind-blowing questions.
The hosts Srilanka began day two on 277-9 and got to 338 before spinner Maharaj took the final wicket for the second best Test figures by a South African. Left-arm spinner Maharaj's figures at the Sinhalese Sports Club put him behind Hugh Tayfield's 9-113 against England in 1957 in the list of South Africa's best bowling figures in Test cricket. But his effort went all in vain as Dananjaya-Perera combo dismissed SA for just 124. Lanka’s first wicket partnership alone had scored 116 runs. SA players played with no plan or conviction. They were missing ABD which was evident. Baring Faf, none impressed again. Amla and De Kock have been found wanting again. Amla form suggests he is close to end of his career. Danajjaya grabbed his first five-fer. This is just his 3rd test. Lanka in response ended day at 151-3 They lead by 365 runs. Karunaratne scored yet another fifty. His run of scores in this series has been 159, 60, 53, 59*. That’s staggering stuff. He has been prime reason for Lanka being so dominant in this series.
