Elaena Targaryen
maidenvault sisters + Naerys headcanons
i don’t think Naerys was as accepting as she is often portrayed as, she was just resigned to her treatment. Aegon is her husband therefor he has the ‘right’ to mistreat her as he pleased, her father never did anything to stop him and while Aemon may have loved her and did little things to ease her suffering he was never going to save her. with that in mind i don’t think she liked Melissa Blackwood and would rather Aegon publicly favour none of his mistresses but at least this one isn’t obviously trying to take her place and take her sons place as heir so at least she can grit her teeth and bare it easier. i think her feelings on the Daena situation were complex, she knows Aegon well enough to know he likely took advantage of Daena while she was desperate and maybe given some more years she’d have given Daena more grace but I think she felt betrayed and angry knowing her cousin who witnessed her treatment still slept with Aegon and played into her humiliation for ‘selfish’ reasons. Daenerys was born only 2 years after Daemon so i don’t think Naerys really had the proper time to process that entire situation and probably died pretty bitter about it.
i think a lot of Rhaenas piety is just her coping with her situation and at some point she just ended up tricking herself into thinking she’s as devout as she portrayed herself, it was easier to stand the isolation of the maidenvault if she pretended she believed it was for the greater good. I think she gets angry at Daena because she views what she does as needlessly reckless and she’s scared that one day Daena will have her tongue cut out and be sent to the silent sisters, Baelor has shown himself to be erratic and willing to take drastic measures but this in turn sours the relationship between her and Daena because Daena just sees her compliance as her being a coward.
my interpretation of Daena is one i fear people will not like. Daena was very prideful in her Targaryen heritage and idolised her grandfather Daemon Targaryen and likely Rhaenyra as well, she likely felt cheated out of getting to be a proper Targaryen what the the extinction of dragons especially with her being a naturally gifted rider. I think Daena was likely very similar to Rhaenyra in that she was a bright and wilful girl who (due to experiences that aren’t her fault) grew to be very bitter and angry woman. bitter at Baelor (obviously), bitter at Daeron for abandoning her and dying on her thus leaving her alone (i think she’d grow to have a hero worship of him and really put him on a pedestal similar to how the Starklings view Robb), bitter at the Dornish for taking Daeron away, for refusing to submit to her house, bitter at her sisters (namely Rhaena) for not fighting back enough. she probably began to hate Daeron ii for making peace with the dornish and having a dornish wife and kids, there was probably even a part of her that believed Daemon deserved the Targaryen name and kingship over him. I think Daena tends to get shucked into the Alyssa/Baela/Lyanna/Arya school of tomboy characters who people tend to overlook their complexities in favour of a “they’re not like other girls” approach to their characters.
I think Elaena chafed just as much as Daena did at being isolated and confined though i think she allowed herself to find solace rather than outright rebel because she watched her sister do it only to come up empty every time so she immersed herself in her books and numbers and just hoped things would work out, i think she spent a lot of time dissociating in the vault. her time isolated is what made her susceptible to Alyns and Aegons grooming because i think once she was free she was desperate for companionship, i think she toed the line of being borderline hypersexual for a time as a way to get back at Baelor for locking her away due to her ‘desirability’ even though she was only child. at the same time i think she learned from Daena not to be so loud and reckless in her rebellion. i think she’s most likely on the spectrum, monotone voice, blunt way of speaking, either way to much eye contact or no eye contact at all, once she gains freedom i think she’s a complete perfectionist and incredibly particular about every little thing.
