Why the heck did they decide to give Aemond real depth and complexity in season 1 only for it to be rescinded in seasons 2 and 3 [so far]. he exists mostly to be nerfed and fetishized. Its such a shame because he had potential to be an actual complex antagonist, the anti parallel of a much older and experienced Daemon whilst also being alike in other ways but he is repeatedly given humiliating scenes for fetishizing reasons which largely contribute nothing to the story. It appears as if show runners are intentionally dunkin on him every chance they get.
The glaring difference between building a character through their own experiences and traumas versus artificially shaping them to serve as a shadow for someone else. The show's writers operate under a logic of "forced mirroring" that underestimates the audience's intelligence and hollows out the characters' own identity.In Aemond's childhood, the narrative worked so well because it anchored itself in the source material to give dramatic weight to his actions.
The monumental audacity of taming the largest living creature in the world — Vhagar —, the loss of his eye, and the subsequent family chaos in the High Tide throne room were visceral moments. There, the series perfectly established the irreversible fracture of the dynasty and gave Aemond a genuine motivation born out of pain and overcoming adversity. That wasn't about Daemon; it was about Aemond's own survival and self-assertion within a family that neglected him.The writers' negligence begins to take its toll when they decide to introduce severe traumas, such as the abuse at age 11, solely for shock value, without any intention of giving it the weight and psychological development that an issue of this gravity demands. By throwing such a heavy element into the story and then acting as if it never happened, the writing demonstrates tremendous cowardice and a lack of narrative responsibility. The trauma becomes a mere aesthetic accessory, a cheap trick to generate internet comments, instead of being treated as the character-shaping factor it should be.This superficiality explodes shamefully in the second season.
The genuine regret and panic we saw on his face upon realizing he had started a world war by killing Lucerys were completely swept under the rug after a single, measly scene of mourning. Instead of exploring the psychological torture of a young man carrying the weight of the first blood spilled, the writers chose the laziest path: turning him into a chess-board villain, a cold "playable character" who spits out strategic lines and makes absurdly stupid decisions, like burning his own brother. This decision destroys the character's cohesion just to shock the viewer and artificially accelerate the plot.And then we reach the root of the show's structural problem: the obsession with turning Aemond into a Daemon clone. In the book, the parallels between the two are based on historical circumstances and archetypes — both are second sons, formidable warriors, fearsome dragonriders, and dangerous individuals —, but there was never any admiration or desire for imitation on Aemond's part.
They barely interacted. The series, however, pushes it unbelievably far by suggesting that Aemond molds his personality, his clothes, and his attitudes to emulate an uncle he barely knows.By doing this, the writers commit the fatal mistake of subordinating Aemond's existence to Daemon's figure. It is a lazy decision that denotes a glaring lack of creativity in the writers' room: if they don't know how to develop the uniqueness of a traumatized, one-eyed young prince, they simply copy the "bad boy" formula that already worked with the older character. The result is that pathetic and humiliating scene in the second season, where the brilliance the character should have had by his own merit is entirely sacrificed at the altar of visual fetishism and cheap comparison. They reduced one of the dance's most intense characters to an impoverished, poorly written copy of his greatest rival.
