Questions here :)

19. Has your Dark Urge become particularly close to anyone romantically and/or platonically in their journey? If so, who, and what is the relationship like? If no, why not?

Maidris romanced Gale so he's easily the one he's closest to. I like to think of their dynamic as Maidris saying something completely incomprehensible and weird and Gale nodding along like 'okay love, let's get you some hot chocolate'. For both of them, they're the connections to reality they desperately needed.

Outside of Gale, he's closest to Shadowheart, initially bonding because of their shared amnesia but coming to be besties by the end of the game. He's also really close to Wyll, who keeps him grounded and encourages the sides of Maidris that don't come naturally to him- kindness without expectation being one of them. Karlach, too, who he just adores for some reason. Finding out that he was involved with Gortash later on makes him feel a little protective of her, and more than a little bit guilty.

In act 3, he and Jaheira have a bond built solely on sarcasm and playful antagonism (to others they probably look like they don't like each other but they're good friends I promise).

20. Is your Dark Urge open about their Urge or do they try to hide it? Why?

He definitely tried to hide it at first. He told the others about the amnesia and headaches, but the urges he kept to himself. He lied about killing Alfira, he didn't act on any urges he could control, but definitely went off into the woods a good few times to release some of that energy.

The companions probably knew there was something he was hiding (the way he held his dagger was a little too practiced, the way he used it a little too brutal and precise, hey why does the wizard have a knife?), but the truth didn't out until the night he wanted to kill Gale, after which the confession came out like a flood tide.

22. What first impression does your Dark Urge give off to strangers?

Second only to the urge, Maidris has this desperation to be liked and valued by the people around him. As a result, he puts on a front that, to others, has the vibes of someone who is trying a bit too hard to be normal. On first glance, he seems like a normal half-elf, but there's something behind his eyes, in the way he speaks, that just feels off to most people, even if they don't quite know just what it is.

maidris says he doesn't know how to play. gale wants to teach him, but as soon as they start playing, maidris just knows what he's doing, like instinct

or like he's been taught before

gale calls it beginner's luck, but maidris goes to sleep thinking about a different hand, a colder hand, pushing pieces on the board. instead of gale's encouraging smile, it is a mocking grin he imagines. his hands itch.

Thank you for the ask!!!!!! Answering these for my boy Maidris. Questions here :)

9. Do you have a specific lyric or quote which you associate with your OC?

So, so many. I have a terrible playlist for him that I could draw a million from, but I'll restrain myself to just one.

‘It struck my heart, only once / Which made me want it more / The emptiness it left in me / Will always need to be filled / For it will be there all the time / From now on, forever more,’ from Lightning and Snow by Woods of Ypres. 

I don’t really have an explanation for exactly why it fits. It could be about love (cough cough Gortash) but it could also be about the urges (i.e. the striking being the first time he killed). Either way it makes me sad! I love it!

10. What's an AU that would be interesting to explore with your OC?

I love this question because I’m already working on an AU hehe. It's a modern, no-magic-ish band au! I’ve talked about bits of it sporadically through the last month and a half and I answered another ask about it here :)

14. How does your OC want to be seen by other characters?

Pre-tadpole: Maidris wants to seem in control. In control of Bhaal’s temple, in control of his emotions, and in control of his urges. For that reason, he doesn’t tend to stick around people for very long and, though he isn’t repressing his urges, he prefers to engage with them alone. When he comes to trust Gortash, this kind of all unravels and while he likes being in control of his emotions, he likes annoying Gortash more.

Post-tadpole: He wants people to think, at any cost, that he is very normal and okay. He does kind things because he wants people to like him. Eventually, he’ll come to actively want to do good, but at the start it’s a mixture of disgust and an ache to be liked.
