Q&A with Mainekk
MaiNekk
„MaiNekk” was formed in 2006 by guitarist Erki Pӓrnoja, now better known as a member of the most successful Estonian music export to date „Ewert and The Two Dragons”, Swedish musicians Daniel Ögren and Patrik Grundström, and Denmark born Ulrik Ording. All of them were studying music in Göteborg, Sweden, at the time.„Sometimes the music lands in post-rock, sometimes in Fleet Foxes-airy indie, in instrumental pop-fuzz or in some other distinguished compote,” according to Swedish newspaper Vӓrmlands Folkblad. Here we asked band/member Erki Pärnoja to answer our questions, and thus inaugurate our new interview series, where we will introduce you our artists.
How did your band come into being?
It happened at a music school in Southern Sweden, where we all studied. We were coursemates. We started hanging out together and playing together in various constellations and by the middle of the first term we had a band.
How would you describe your music to a deaf person?
It's like four people get together and they live really far from each other but they're the best buddies and love spending time and ideas and laughs with each other and they have like so much to talk about every time they get together. So it sounds like great fun and chaos and everybody talking at the same time and serious quietness too.
If you could decide to put your own track in any film ever made or yet to be made, what film/track would it be?
If it was up to me, i would put Daniel's song "Timmy" into the Western TV series "Rawhide". Right where it belongs.
What movie would you liked to have soundtracked and why?
I wouldn't want to change the music of any film i like, so i guess I would have to pick a silent movie then. I'd pick Nosferatu. Just to give it a shot.
When you were 13 you listened to…
I listened to the Beatles. And the Beatles ONLY. It took a year or two until I decided that the Stones and The Doors are quite alright too. I grew more tolerant towards all other artists as the years went by. Good thing they did.
What was your first vinyl, cassette purchase?
My first cassette purchase was the White Album by the Beatles.
Currently obsessed with…
Arvo Pärt, Other Lives, St Vincent and David Byrne, Italian food, Thai food and white wine instead of red.
Make three wishes...
I wish for a warm summer this year. I wish fresh and new inspiring ideas for everyone on this planet! I wish we can get together with Mainekk soon again! To make the music we make.
