Tropical Storm Irene’s winds weren’t as fierce as feared, but its rains swelled rivers well above flood stage and the National Weather Service doesn’t expect the Connecticut River at Springfield to crest until Tuesday. Stranded people had to be plucked from floodwaters in Northampton and Westfield. The State Department of Transportation closed Interstate 91 in Deerfield for out of fears the highway bridge over the Deerfield River was unsafe. Rick Sluben, abc40/Fox 6 meteorologist, said the storm dumped an average of 10 inches onto already-saturated Western Massachusetts on Saturday and Sunday. All that water will end up in the Connecticut River. Shelburne Falls got 8.5 inches of rain on Sunday alone. Rain was heavier to the west of Springfield in the Hilltowns and Berkshires. And Sluben said all that water will make it to the Connecticut between now and Wednesday.
