The Hidden Gem of Crowne Hotel: Maroush

Honestly, if it weren’t for the generous folks over at MakanLuar.com, I probably would’ve never known of this restaurant. 

As one of the oldest hotels in town, Crowne Plaza is unassuming. Located smack dab in the middle of office buildings (literally two buildings away from mine), it’s typically associated with press conferences, seminars, business trips-- far from indulgence. So it did come as a surprise for us to find this not-so-little hidden gem inside the hotel. 

No restaurant-review of Maroush can begin before we talk about the decor. Consisting of the bar area and three other enclosed areas, it occupies quite a big space, all filled with beautiful carvings and decorations straight out of Morocco (literally-- all their decor is shipped all the way from Morocco and neighbouring countries). We sat in the non-smoking section, but the smoking/shisha section was what amazed us-- a long function table surrounded by chairs adorned with camel bones, a large harem-like sitting area, and large windows occupying one whole side of the wall (My favourite bit was the harem sofa-- it would make anyone feel like a proper sheikh).

The green room-- a smaller private room that sits 4-8 people-- was its own attraction: intimate setting, huge candles for ambience. It basically screams romance (if your idea of romance involves 4-8 people). In a good way, of course. 

The non-smoking section, where we sat to have our lunch, is its own beauty-- the long tables were perfect for the communal style of eating, while two rather large round tables on the side serve as the ideal area for groups to gather. 

After spending about 30 minutes admiring the place, we were all both excited and starving. Thankfully, the first round of meals arrived.

As with all middle-eastern restaurants, first came the mezze-- both cold and hot. The cold mezze included the classics-- hummus, baba ganoush-- but also had interesting mixes you don’t typically find paired with hummus and ‘ganoush, such as shakshouka and Biber Salatasi (Turkish chilli salad). All delicious, but my personal favourite had to be the chilli salad-- it consisted of fresh red chilli, garlic, and mint leaves, among others-- and tasted very refreshing, with a perfect balance of spiciness. 

Karidesli Peynirli Mantar: oven-baked mushrooms with cheese and shrimps

Pastilla: pastries with chicken and powdered sugar

As for the hot mezze, the Karidesli Peynirli Mantar (oven-baked mushrooms with cheese and shrimps) was hands down the tastiest. While the Borek (pastry filled with spinach and cheese) and Pastilla (pastries with chicken and sweet powdered sugar) were good, how could you beat mushrooms, shrimp, and cheese? It’s almost unfair. But in all honesty, the borek was a tad salty for me. 

Firindra Ezmeli Balik: pan fried fish with cheese and veggies

After the mezze, it was all a blur as a seemingly endless stream of main course dishes arrived. The Firindra Ezmeli Balik (pan fried fish with cheese and vegetables) came first and instantly became a crowd favourite. It was soft, savoury, cheesy and delicious. Then came a succession of lamb dishes: Lamb Shank Cous Cous-- falling-off-the-bone lamb shank with savoury couscous and gravy, and Doner Durum-- Turkish bread filled with flavourful and aromatic grilled lamb.

Feslegenli Patlican Sarmasi: The light of my life

Now as many of you may know, eggplant is my favourite food item ever, for life, so when confronted with Feslegenli Patlican Sarmasi (fried eggplant parcels filled with sauteed vegetables and fresh basil), you know I lost my marbles. The eggplant was cooked perfectly until tender, filled with savoury vegetables, and drenched in olive oil which complemented the taste very well (not that anything can go wrong with eggplant). It was also topped with cheese. Which might not be authentic but it tasted so good. *cries*

Baklava: pastries filled with syrup, honey and pistachio

The mains were followed by dessert: Firindra Sutlac (creamy cold rice pudding) and Baklava (you know what a baklava is. Cmon), which I thought were both extremely sweet, but perfect to wash down the savoury richness of all our main dishes.

Moroccan tea

Finally, strong and aromatic moroccan tea to end the day’s lunch. We were stuffed and happy. As a closing note, I can’t really compare Maroush’s food to any one authentic cuisine-- it’s a mix of cuisines from various middle eastern countries, using less-than-conventional spices and cooking methods (a.k.a. cheese) but somehow, it all works. Top tip: order the eggplant.
