Hello 💞
What is the number one tip you would give to a new writer/ artist 😁
hi friend! it's so weird for me to be asked this question, since I often feel like I'm still searching for the same kind of advice, haha. in hopes of offering a little nugget of wisdom, I'll go with the best advice I've been given in hopes it'll work for you!
get comfortable creating 'bad' things.
like most things, failure gets easier to process with practice. I've been writing fanfiction since I was 12, and the amount of absolute shit I have produced is... impossible to sum up. it's only in the last year or so, though, that I've started to accept that not all my pieces of writing have to be top quality, or even good. embracing this has led me to write more in the past two years than in almost a decade, and I'm having so much fun.
when you're comfortable creating 'bad' works, not only does it free you up to try new things without worrying about the final result, but it also offers you so many chances to learn from your mistakes.
it also makes criticism (constructive or otherwise) easier to deal with --- if you're already cool with a piece of writing being part of a learning curve, or a failed first attempt, it's much easier to hear other's opinions of how it could be different/better.
so yeah. make bad art. write bad fic. don't do things to the best of your ability. create for the sake of creating, and savour the process.
this is something I'm still working on 18 years later, but... it's worth it.
