Facebook Pages - How Will The New Changes Affect You?
Facebook have recently upgraded the page platform (Feb 11 2011). Here's a brief summary of what those changes are and what they mean to page owners.
Upgrade Option
Firstly you old Facebook pages will still work. However you now have the option to upgrade to the new Facebook page format with the click of a button.
New Layout
The Facebook page layout now looks much more like your personal Facebook profile. You can now have profile pictures across the top of the page. You might think you can put a banner image in there, however the images rotate so any banner would quickly become jumbled. However you can use it to feature particular people in your organisation, show products or anything else you think would be valuable.
You No Longer Have Tabs Across The Top Of The Page
But don't worry. You can still have an FBML landing page. All the tabs are now listed on the left hand side of the page, much like groups are listed on your profile.
Use Facebook As Page Owner
Now this is amazing. You now have the option to use Facebook as the owner of the page. So if your page was called ThisIsMyPage, you can click the "Use Facebook as ThisIsMyPage" link and any comments or likes you make will be linked to ThisIsMyPage.
You can imagine the power of this. You can now like other pages and profiles and you get a link directly back to your Facebook Page. It's a fantastic way to promote your page. Obviously you should not be spamming, but if you reply to someone's comment with useful and helpful information, one of the first things they will do is click on the link.
In the case of a page, that will take them directly to your Facebook pages, and if you've set things up correctly, that means a landing page where they can either opt in to your mailing list, or like your page to reveal more content!
Page Newsfeed
Because Facebook pages are now more like a profile, Facebook have added a Recent Activity link to Facebook pages. You can now view all the activity that you've made using your page for Facebook.
Admin Changes
These settings all look the same; however there are two major changes. The featured option allows you to feature likes and page owners. So you can feature any page you want to promote in prime position on your page. This is like getting free advertising so is a great change with loads of potential.
Spam Protection
Facebook have now made it super simple to see who is spamming your Facebook pages. They highlight anything they suspect of being spam and you can easily remove it. If you've got a large fan base, then you've probably got a lot of spammy comments on your page, so it's now very simple to find and delete.
These changes make Facebook pages far more powerful. Don't forget that in March 2011 Facebook will also be changing FBML to use IFRAMEs. This is a major change and will make Facebook pages even more powerful. More on that later!
