Numbers, yo
Adding 10s and 5s is typically easier, right? And subtracting to make them is relatively simple, right?
So why does most of tumblr seem to freak out about “making 10s” in the post I just reblogged 3 times?
123+67=? 120+60+10=? 120+70=? 100+20+60+10=? 100+90=?
Thanks to the transitive property of addition, all of the above equal 190. Which is the easiest? Breaking down and grouping numbers into easier chunks of 10s helps many students with mental math. Many, but not all.
That being said, “make ten” was probably the terminology used in class for this lesson. There is no error in the wording if that is the case.
The explanation given by the teacher is fine, too; though one could also take 5 from 8 and add it to 5 and still be left with 3 to get 13. In addition, the teacher should go one-on-one with the student to assure that they grasp the concept. It is up to the student to decide if they find it useful.
There are better examples of how the common core is a miserable failure.
