GiveBIG: Today you give. Tomorrow the emails stop.
Unless you’ve got a email spam filter stronger than all get out, you’ve been getting inundated with emails about GiveBIG. It’s the annual bacchanalian orgy of charitable giving hosted by The Seattle Foundation.
Hundreds of nonprofits are vying for your attention and affection in the form of cold hard cash, and today is your day to give it to them. If you’ve got some dollars to spare today is the day to get your nobless oblige on, as the stretch match will take your bucks the distance. Last year this day raised $12.9M for almost 1,500 nonprofits from over 33,000 donors. It’s really huge.
If you need inspiration, we picked a few orgs we feel are hella worth your dollars. There’s plenty to choose from so if none of these have the debit card burning, there’s surely something that lights your fire.
My picks would be The Washington Bus (love those cuties), the Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services (so niche, so necessary), and Real Change (because duh).
Bike Works (really great at serving kids of all income levels at their bike swaps), PAWS (because of their compassionate work for both companion animals and wildlife), and The Vera Project (because any all-ages venue that's been around for nearly 15 years deserves 15 more).
I always give to Shunpike (their business services for arts groups make so many cool things possible), YouthCare (they serve homeless youth in our community. I mean, how can you not want to throw all your money at that?), and Transportation Choices Coalition (they bust their butts everyday to make transit a priority to lawmakers because somebody’s gotta do it).
Hand over your money. Because for these organizations it usually just comes down to funding. Resources make change possible, and change is sorely needed right about now.
If you’ve got it, give it.
