Sunday's around here are for Mom Makeovers! ( she doubted me the whole time)
One shade fits all?
Ok, so I know that everyone is super-passionate about NARS Blush in Orgasm (often touted as a universally-flattering product, thanks to its blend of pinkish-peachish-goldish shades). I used to LOVE it. Like it was the only product I would even consider as a blush, no thanks, I don't need to try your more reasonably-priced alternative.
But that was B.B.H. Before Brown hair. For years and YEARS, I'd kept my hair within the light-to-platinum blonde spectrum, which went ok with my super-fair skin and pixie haircut. But then I started noticing more and more people on the streets rocking the same hair and my hair was getting more and more reliant on pricey deep conditioning treatments, so I knew it was time for a change. And what could be more of a change from practically white locks to a dark chocolate brown? So I went for it. And regretted it immediately (7 months later, I am finally starting to accept the look...but that's another post for another time).
Whenever you undergo a drastic change like that, it's definitely worth considering what's in your cosmetics case. Which, duh, of course. Everyone knows that. So that's what I did, going darker and bolder on lipstick, more attention to eyebrows, all that jazz. But I stuck with good ol' NARS Orgasm, because it was universal after all. Until my mom came into town. And like most moms visiting their children who live across the country, she went overboard with photos. We're eating dinner in a really crowded Korean restaurant, time for a photo! I'm locking my front door, photo op! Really, it's like she's a member of the paparazzi when she's visiting. Anyway, the thing about all these pictures was that I could finally see just how lackluster I looked when using such a light shade of blush.
Actually, what came to mind was that old book Color Me Beautiful, and how everyone is a particular season based on coloring. While as a blonde I was a Summer, with dark hair I had to embrace the shades meant for Winters. Which means a bolder palette for everything -- blush included. So is a universally-flattering product nothing but a pipe dream? I think so. (But who knows! People love Clinique's Black Honey Almost Lipstick, so maybe there's hope yet.) In the end, I went with a shade from MAC. But I do still miss the days of NARS Orgasm, such a truly lovely color.
