Makeup as Technology
Technology is an extension of the human body with the use of a tool. Therefore there are two tools being used in this experiment, social media and makeup. Social media is a more obvious technology because its societal connection to other technological advancements such as the internet, computers and smartphones. Makeup on the other hand is an ancient tool that has been used for generations in multiple cultures for over 10,000 years. Makeup uses a brush and has a palette similar to painting, but instead of a taut frame one canvas uses a for a face. One purpose of this technology is ornamentation. But since the days of war or theater, our society has began to use makeup on a daily basis, eliminating its unique power of enhancing ones’ image. Now, it seems that wearing makeup is a rite of passage into womanhood, which isn’t a negative thing, but can be when it is expected. A technology that has become so expected that it is the woman who chooses not to wear makeup that actually stands out more. The choice to not wear makeup may stem from lacking knowledge or care of application, or because of the desire to maintain a “natural” look. By denying the expectation to wear makeup, other women make a statement on their independent thought and identity on beauty and self image.
By presenting herself with makeup on, _vanessa_jane is sending signs to the male viewers that she cares about her looks and attractiveness to others. In our current culture this can mean a whole slew of things, from being feminine and caring, to vain and shallow. As women, we objectify ourselves with the application of makeup to receive an audience.
The presence of makeup has become so ingrained in our culture that men’s thoughts and words towards women is visible in their interactions.
