This is one of those rare songs that makes me get misty-eyed, ever since I heard it back in 2002. Hip-hop that moves the feet is one thing, but hip-hop that moves the soul is something else entirely. “Make You Feel That Way” is a celebration of life’s small victories and the commonalities we all share. Individually, the lines seem insignificant, but put them all together and it’s beautiful summation and example of how to live with a positive outlook. I’ve never played football and a fade haircut isn’t even possible on my head, but the flow, the cadence, the sincerity and most of all, the positive vibe makes it all relatable, instructful and maybe even comforting. It has been a very divisive time recently, so art that highlights what we have in common and the qualities and aspirations we all share is needed more than ever.
Oh and he uses 1930s slang for cash, “scrill;” big points just for plucking that one out of obscurity.
