Fun fact, my closest Battle Buddies never went to Basic Training with me yet we've battled through so much with what we've learned from each other. Never deployed with me though we survived many, many missions. Our best training always came from each other. I remember talking to my older brother before his first tour in Iraq. That was the first time he approached me as an active duty Parachutest for my advice on what his guys should expect. As a reserve Soldier it was a point of pride. My experiances with the brothers and sisters I deployed with helped a new cycle of Troops that came after me. I'll never forget it because it was the first time my older brother had come to me to have a serious conversation about fear and purpose. Several hours through the night and a pack of cigartettes. How healthy fear is in a place you intend to survive. Respect for the humans you engage with. Taking the training and missions seriously. Having a mission plan that does insure your success or survival, but it might mean your ready for what ever comes. Trusting the woman or man next to you. Telling your Mom your fine when your camp just got hit. Making sure you have enough bullets incase the plan needs to change. Everything I told him I learned in the 983rd Regional Support Command, the 611th Engineering Company, and Echo Company 1-46 at Fort Knox Kentucky. When we think about deployments, Troops, Veterans, etc. Please consider how much it takes to be 1 Soldier, let alone 700,000. I would go again tomorrow if they asked. It's a labor of love despite how deep the consequences have run. Every shared cigarette, joke, mission, burn barrel walk around, spoonful of green Eggs, tire change, 2 mile run, late formation. You name it.
