GUEST POST: "Things I Know" by Andrea del Campo

As we've traveled across the continent we've been lucky enough to lure several friends in and around the tour to...get involved.  The lovely Toby Hughes came on the Toronto leg, Al Connors met us in Montreal after hosting us in Ottawa, and we've seen numerous friends in multiple cities, as improvisers seem to fly from city to city like macro-migratory bees. The following post is an extension of this delightful trend, as good friend Andrea del Campo of Winnipeg's Outside Joke has offered wisdom to you, our dedicated, dedicated readers.  Outside Joke's blog kicked off just as ours did, so like any birth-pair, we're best friends forever.  Check it out once you're done here.  Thanks Andrea!

My name is Andrea del Campo! I live in Toronto, and I'm in a Winnipeg-based improv troupe called Outside Joke. That's me with Devin and Tom in the picture above. Even though they aren't looking at me- or even at the camera- I promise that we're all having a real good time together.During the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, HB! and OJ got to be super pals, and I had the giggly pleasure of spending both the Winnipeg and Toronto legs of Tom and Devin's tour with them. I feel that this gives me a certain kind of authority, a benevolent authority, a knowledge-based authority. I learned a few things about these gentlemen in the weeks I spent in their charming company, and I would like to share a few fun facts about HB! with their webmmunity. Here they are:

a) Devin spoke fluent Spanish as a child. Unfortunately, the passage of time and years living in English-speaking countries have robbed Devin of his multi-lingualism, leaving him barely able to order an enchilada without sounding like the gringo he is. b) Hip.Bang! is touring in Tom's Toyota Camry, and in the passenger-side door-pocket there is an informative pamphlet about American strip-mining prospects. Tom claims to know nothing about how it got there.

c) Devin says animals often figure into HB!'s improv. Indeed, I watched a scene where they hand-puppeted a zebra and bear across the ocean. My friends, family and I like to play a game where we assign "spirit animals" to eachother (this is mine, this is my stepdad's), so I'm going to do that for these guys. Tom is a prairie dog. With his soft, mammalian facial features, keen observational skills and impeccable posture, Tom stands sentinel over the landscape of his dreams. Devin, possessing sharper features, long limbs and graceful movement, is the Hip.Bang! heron, moving easily between city and country, as the heron does between land and water.

d) Devin likes: bikes, cute baseball hats, dancing, graphic print pyjama pants, girls with backpacks and daytime shifts. Tom likes: milk in his coffee, buying the same shoes in a different colour, his hair, Tanqueray gin, white t-shirts and sports.

e) Tom and Devin's golf aliases are Noodle and Fuck Chops, respectively.

f) These guys are thoughtful, considerate and independently hilarious. Devin is quick to be delighted by simple things, and Tom appreciates the good in those around him. Sometimes it's nice to know that great performers are also great people.
