I've heard whisperings about a part 3 of the series. is there any credible source for that or is it speculation? also where do you think a part 3 would take us? because i'm a lame nerd who uhhh can't move on???

so there’s no official confirmation or anything yet so for now it’s all speculation.

i’ll have a better idea of the likelihood once the actual chapter is out, but there are a few things about this “final chapter” that stick out to me as… odd? and possibly hint towards a part three. (note that some of these might change once the chapter is out but i’m going off of things that artie / @cxrtus has told me from his korean sites)

there is no mention of kaneki making it out of the underground so far

the name of the daughter is “maya,” which in sanskrit can mean “illusion” and also connects to hindu religion (much like the nagaraj/vasuki concepts we’ve already been introduced to)

this all feels…. too happy? not that i’m against a happy ending, but this in particular definitely feels very… fake? wishful? and unresolved. like this is a dream ending, of “wow, look at how nice things could be if things just resolved themselves like this.” like a farce, almost.

as for what a part three will entail, i’m very into the concept of kaneki being stuck underground within dragon once it’s turned into stone, and the three aces (hide, touka, and shuu) taking over as the protagonists in turn. it would probably focus on a. rescuing kaneki and uncovering the truth about the previous oek underground, and b. the human/ghoul alliance up on the surface.

kaneki’s arc is, effectively, over. he’s learned what he needs to learn. he’s grown how he needs to. he’s realized that the people around him matter, not just himself, so it would make sense for a part three to focus on these other people who surround and care about him and let their arcs be wrapped up nicely. if there is one, i don’t see it being particularly long, but i see kaneki really only being in it towards the end.

—- he’s on break. LET THAT MUCH BE SAID before you ( or anyone ) judge him for passing time with his feet propped on the desk. only ten minutes remain of his break, he thinks, so he may as well pass them in comfort. interlaced fingers make a pillow from his palms, & he casts his gaze across the room, towards the hallway, to his phone  . . . he makes a study of passersby & coworkers with no intent in mind.

not until he catches sight of an abnormality & mado, also finishing her break with a cup of coffee. more accurately, perhaps, he catches sight of mado’s abnormality.

he’s never seen her look less than pristine; it’s to be expected from the ICE QUEEN. she maintains order around her so that she might tighten her grasp upon the environment around her. but this  . . . is bizarre.

‘    second-class investigator, mado !     ‘   he calls out —- loudly. calling out this imperfection is something he cannot help but feel compelled to do — it cannot be stopped.      ‘     so you know you got a huge stain on the back of your shirt, right ?      ‘

     SHE DOESN’T WANT TO LET GO. You can tell by how firm her grip is, you can tell how SCARED she is by how fast she’s shaking. She can’t lose another, that’s not something she can deal with again. TEARS threaten to spill from soft ( tired ) eyes, her upper lip quivering. 

     ❝ Aunt-Auntie. . . ❞ Her words are soft, hesitant to come from her. ❝ I-I-I know. . . I know I can’t tell you wha-what to do, but next time, please, don’t go alone. ❞

she's going to take the bubblewrap off his desk. he won't be needing it anytime soon.

THE MIND is hardly refreshed when the clock strikes the remorseless end of his break. but still … he has a mug of coffee in hand ( one that he stashes in his desk drawer overnight & does a hurried job of rinsing before reusing ) so he’s got an optimistic perspective of the coming afternoon.

the mug brushes his lips as he enters the shared work space, internally rehearsing a list of tasks he has yet to do. however, even as his mug hovers there, he never gets that first sip of hot elixir  — he’s DISTRACTED by the sight of another paused beside his desk, just behind his chair.

mado, what the hell are you doing over there ?

an internal list of tasks turns into an archeological dig of his memory as he hastens to recall whether or not he left anything of concern on his desktop. the dig comes up empty … but his coworker is already on the move. she really hadn’t paused for long, & now seidou can’t help the impression that she is making the active effort to avoid looking at him.

she must know he’s there, right  ? a deer in headlights …

his gaze drops from an obstinate expression … to the bubblewrap she holds in clutch ?

FINALLY he remembers to try to drink his coffee, but distraction lingers upon him still & spills drops of coffee from his lips to the collar of his shirt. messy swears escape him as he wipes his mouth with the back of his hand & holds his coffee at arm’s length, but -    ‘     man,   mado,  did you just steal bubble wrap from my desk   ?     ‘
