I do really appreciate Ewing and Gillen's strategy for framing Iron Man: Fatal Frontier. You like the rich playboy billionaire archetype, but you want to actually take the character to task somewhat—but actually exploring all the ways Stark and people like him can be horrible might be too much of a scorched-earth move for mainline continuity. In a What-If or alternate universe, sure, but how do we actually explore how awful Stark is while keeping the toys of the 616 universe?
Easy: have the big problem be that he's affected by a magic metal that slowly turns you into a megalomaniacal villain. Then have him feel guilty about everything he did afterwards but ultimately find that he can't regret a specific thing. Golden. You got plausible deniability that the character can be a hero and you got to explore all the ways he's just sort of awful.
