Before leaving Livingstone towards Botswana I gave my bike a little maintenance. Checking the chain length unveiled that the chain already stretched above 1%. After about 7.500km it was necessary to put on my third and last chain. Did the work routine in the hostel, but didn't go for a test ride after...not good! The next morning when we all started cycling towards the border, I realized instantly that my drive train had some serious issues...the new chain jumped over the old cassette - damn, seems like I already waited too long with the chain swap and the old stretched chain has already damaged the sprockets. Two options to solve this issue: 1.) Revert to the old chain and accept that the expensive and in these countries not available Ultegra chain rings will also wear out pretty quick. 2.) Leave the new chain on and change to a new cassette. I decided for option 2.) with the only trade off, that 11 speed cassettes are not available in the Zambian market... I was carrying the first five sprockets - which are the most used - as a replacement. In order to do the work I just needed to find a workshop equipped with a chain whip. Asking around in Livingstone, it seems like there are no proper bike shops and people pointed me to the Maramba market. The market was one of these pretty typical African markets where people would sell everything possible. To my surprise I instantly found lots of little scrap bike "shops". After asking around a bit, a guy said "Sure, I think I know what you need! Wait a moment..." He came back and handed me that chain whip tool that I necessary needed.
