Malcolm Glazer passes away

Malcolm Glazer, owner of Manchester United, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers passed away on Wednesday, at the age of 85. The American businessman whose acquisition of the Buccaneers in 1995 saw them win their first Super Bowl Championship in 2002, went on to acquire the controlling stake in Manchester United ten years later.  He was confirmed dead by the Buccaneers on Wednesday.

According to the Tampa Bay franchise, his wife Linda and their six children  - who are board members at Old Trafford - would continue to run affairs at Raymond James Stadium. Malcolm Glazer was stated to be "a dynamic business leader, who helped mould the Buccaneers into a model franchise and one respected league-wide." He was said to have infected his team (Buccaneers) and employees with a rare determination and dedication to be the best in the NFL.

The FBI looked into death threats made against Malcolm Glazer, the late owner of Manchester United, around the time he was buying the club. Glazer and his family were subjected to a number of threats from fans who were fiercely opposed to the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' takeover bid in 2005. He had already owned the Bucs for a decade when he bought the English football club for around $1.4bn (£872m) - raising the money through heavy borrowing.

The FBI issued subpoenas as part of the investigation but records show the case was closed without prosecution because the authorities could not conclusively identify a caller who left threatening messages. Fans opposed to the Glazers were furious at the sale, fearing he would sell off the stadium, raise prices and saddle the club with debt. Some fans set fire to an effigy of Glazer's likeness during protests at Old Trafford. Others wore black and waved black flags, while calling for a boycott of the club's sponsors. The self-made billionaire died in May at the age of 85.

By Keith Weir LONDON (Reuters) - The Glazer family will make around $150 million by selling part of its stake in Manchester United although the deal will leave the Americans firmly in control of the English soccer club. The Glazers, who bought United for 790 million pounds ($1.34 billion) in 2005, are selling 8 million of their shares in the club which amounts to a stake of about five percent. Once the shares are sold, the six children of the late Malcolm Glazer will still own more than 80 percent of the club's total shareholding. None of the proceeds will go to the club itself, a fact that is likely to annoy some fans who have long campaigned against owners they accuse of burdening United with excess levels of debt following their takeover. None of that money which belongs to the club will be reinvested to buy players or reduce ridiculous season ticket costs which are pricing out working class fans - it will all be pocketed by the Glazers
