Suspiria (2018): A Mini Review
IMDB Summary
“A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.”
"There will be nothing left of you. Only space for me."
Made a Suspiria playlist.
Now excuse me, while I simp for Suspiria (2018) for a mo. Now yes, this remake lacks color and the exuberant Goblin score from the original, but it makes up for in all other categories.
"You’re in a company now. You have to find your right place. You have to decide, what is it you want to be for this company? Is it the head? The spine? The sex? The heart?"
Even without vivid color, Luca's direction stands out with expert and sometimes disorienting camera work and a strong narrative vision. The set design is muted and gorgeous. The dancing and score are beautifully complementary and haunting.
"Why is everyone so ready to think the worst is over?"
The frenzied body horror, the loss of bodily control, the magic and ritual of body/mind, and all of it intricately tied to the dialogue and movements, each with hidden importance and meaning.
"I am she"
Dakota Johnson is not only incredible with the physicality of this role, the duality of her character is strongly portrayed.
This film is a stunning portrait of fear and the losing/taking of oneself. Just goodness gracious, I love horror.
